Cooney Law is a well-established law firm specialising in conveyancing, commercial and family law. We are seeking a proactive and highly organised Practice Manager to join our team and help maintain the smooth and efficient operation of the office.
The Practice Manager is responsible for the overall management of the firm’s operations, including human resources, working with the trust account administrator, IT, facilities, and compliance. This role supports the leadership team in achieving the firm's strategic goals, maintaining efficient workflows, and ensuring exceptional client service delivery.

Key Responsibilities
1. HR & Recruitment: Manage recruitment, onboarding, and performance management for all staff. Develop and implement HR policies, training programmes, and employee development initiatives. Ensure compliance with employment laws, including health and safety regulations. Supervise staff scheduling, leave, payroll and workload management.
2. Client Service & Practice Support: Ensure a high standard of client service is maintained across the firm. Manage client relationships and handle complaints or queries as needed. Work with the team to ensure efficient practice management, including the handling of client files and documentation.
3. Compliance & Risk Management and Finance: Ensure the firm adheres to legal and regulatory requirements, including anti-money laundering (AML), privacy laws, and professional conduct standards. Maintain practice management policies and procedures to meet industry best practices. Manage insurance coverage, and risk mitigation strategies. Assist the trust account administrator with billing, collections, and accounts payable/receivable to ensure financial stability including regularly reviewing suppliers and providing recommendations for cost control.
4. Facilities & Office Management and IT/Systems: Oversee the maintenance and organisation of office space and facilities. Manage office supplies, equipment, and ensure a safe and comfortable working environment. Liaise with vendors and contractors for office services and equipment needs. Oversee the firm’s IT systems and infrastructure, ensuring smooth operation of legal management software and communication tools. Collaborate with external IT providers to manage software updates, data security, and system troubleshooting.
Key Skills and Experience
* Proven experience as a Practice Manager or in a similar role within a law firm or professional services environment.
* Knowledge of legal compliance and regulatory requirements in New Zealand.
* Experience in human resources, including recruitment and employee management.
* Proficiency with law firm management software and IT systems such as One Law and iPayroll.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with all levels of staff and clients.
* A sense of humour and the ability to create a great team culture is essential!
Qualifications
* A relevant degree or professional qualification in business management, law, or a related field.
* Experience in legal or professional services practice management (preferred).
* Knowledge of New Zealand’s legal framework and regulatory environment.
