Job Description Automation Scientist, Medicinal Chemistry, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Oxford General Summary: As part of our continued growth in automated chemical synthesis, the Medicinal Chemistry team is seeking to recruit an HTE/Automation Scientist to join our team at Vertex Oxford. The candidate will work across all aspects of automated synthesis including parallel synthesis and reaction optimization, using either batch or flow techniques. Working closely with our Medicinal Chemistry, Scale Up and Analytical and Purification teams the candidate will develop and optimize reactions for both library synthesis along with troubleshooting routes for single compound synthesis. They will also have the opportunity to apply their knowledge of cutting-edge methodology to accelerate the development of target molecules and generate SAR for active discovery projects. As part of this role, Vertex will support the candidate in developing growing knowledge and expertise in drug design and the holistic drug discovery process through interactions with colleagues across multiple disciplines in our research labs. Key Duties and Responsibilities: Application and development of laboratory automation to enable high throughput reaction optimization and parallel synthesis in either batch or flow Troubleshooting and optimization of reaction sequences Identifying emerging chemical technology to expedite the synthesis of target molecules Use automation to seek innovative methods for chemical synthesis Analysis of complex data sets and creation of synthesis hypotheses Active participation in chemistry project team meetings Presentation of results to chemistry and project teams Knowledge and Skillset: Designs and executes complex, challenging chemistry experiments Knowledge of modern chemical literature and the theoretical and practical aspects of synthetic chemistry Strong interpersonal skills Capable of working independently as well as part of a team Excellent communication and time management skills Maintains a high level of knowledge related to current developments in the scientific Project field Displays proven productivity experimental creativity, and effective dissemination of ideas Demonstrates effective, self-sufficient communication skills, especially in peer-directed presentations Preferred Qualifications Experience in chemical library/parallel synthesis Experience in reaction optimization/methodology development Operating automation platforms (solid/liquid handlers, analytical/purification equipment) for reaction preparation, execution and analysis Practical knowledge of using flow chemistry techniques Knowledge of the application of cutting-edge methodology (e.g. photochemistry, electrochemistry and biocatalysis) Awareness of modern automated optimization techniques (e.g. Design of Experiment, Bayesian optimization) Education and Experience: Equivalent degree in chemistry or related science and/or relevant post-doctoral employment experience.
