We are delighted to offer the opportunity of a 24 month fixed term contract for the post of Specialty Doctor in Ophthalmology. This is a 10PA per week post. The post holder will be expected to work as part of a team with responsibility for maintaining the highest standards of clinical care, for teaching of junior staff and medical students and for actively participating in continuing medical education, and department and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit.
Main duties of the job
The role is based at the Queen's Hospital, Burton but with some sessions delivered at sister sites. The appointment is subject to the National Terms and Conditions of Service for Specialty Doctors (2021), which may be amended by collective agreement from time to time.
Applicants must hold MBBS or an equivalent medical qualification together with the Diploma in Ophthalmology or a higher qualification. Full Registration with the GMC and a licence to practice at time of application is essential. This is not a training post but appointed doctors will be supported to achieve the competencies and requirements for specialty registration through CESR route. They can approach the department to discuss their needs in advance.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* Diploma in Ophthalmology
* FRCOphth
* Full GMC Registration, with a licence to practice, at time of application
* Shall have completed at least four years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in Ophthalmology or as a fixed term specialty trainee in Ophthalmology; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
* Ophthalmology experience at middle grade level
Language Skills
* All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, which could be evidenced by one of the following: - applicants have undertaken undergraduate training in English - applicants have scores in the academic IELTS or equivalent equal to those required for recruitment to MMC specialty training programmes
* Applicants who believe they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of the examples above need to provide evidence
Health
* Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice)
Clinical Knowledge and Skills
* Qualified and experienced cataract surgeon (200 independent and unsupervised phacoemulsification and lens implantations carried out plus 200 cases assisted).
Specialty specific skills
* Any sub-speciality areas of interest would be acceptable to compliment the department - you will need to expand on this section to be specific about your minimum skill/experience requirements and the evidence you will be looking for this and any other specialty specific experience.
Clinical Governance/improving quality of patient care
* Demonstrates understanding of the principles of research
* Evidence of interest and experience in teaching junior doctors and medical students. Ability to innovate and develop new technology/methods where appropriate
* Evidence of active participation in audit
* Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to Ophthalmology
Communication Skills
* Demonstrates clarity in written/spoken communication and capacity to adapt language as appropriate to the situation
* Capacity to listen and take in others' perspectives
