Teaching Fellow in Surgical Specialties (ST1-2 equivalent)

Exciting opportunities have arisen for dynamic, engaging and committed Teaching Fellows to work in specific roles in Medical Education within the Trust to support undergraduate education for Newcastle University Medical School students.
The post would suit trainees who have a special interest in Clinical Education and the post holders will have the opportunity to study for the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Education. Applicants will have completed Foundation Training and/or Core Training. The post will provide a solid basis from which to apply for either a CT post or an ST post.
The posts are available from Wednesday 06.08.25 - Tuesday 04.08.26 and you must have full GMC registration with a license to practice. You must have worked in the NHS for two years as of August 2025.
Main duties of the job
The individual will be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility to ST1-2 level. The duties of the post holder include supporting the delivery of high-quality medical education including the development, delivery and evaluation of courses. Clinical duties of the post holder will be post-specific.
The Teaching Fellow posts span a variety of clinical areas and research domains within Newcastle-upon-Tyne Hospitals, with varied time allocated for clinical and teaching-based work within different posts (posts range from between 30% and 50% allocated teaching time). The clinical opportunities are dependent on the department and equivalent grade of the teaching fellow, however many posts offer ward-based experience, time to attend clinics and theatre lists, as well as the chance to be involved in or lead departmental teaching, audits and quality improvement projects.

Job responsibilities
Teaching: The successful applicant will be responsible for delivering clinical teaching sessions to Newcastle University medical students attached to Newcastle Hospitals. The Trust has a role in the delivery of teaching to all 5 years of the undergraduate MBBS programme but most of the teaching will be delivered to students in years 3, 4 and 5. As well as delivering fixed commitments within the programme it is hoped Teaching Fellows will develop their own innovative ideas for clinical teaching during their time with us.
Clinical: Specific clinical duties will vary depending on the speciality successful applicants are appointed to. Some posts involve an on-call commitment.
Administrative: Successful applicants will be expected to carry out all administrative tasks allocated to him/her by the Medical Education Manager, or clinical supervisor, including keeping of inpatient records, ordering investigations and receiving results.
Research/Audit: The medical education department has a strong reputation for excellent medical education and there are many ongoing projects. The high volume of educational activity performed in the Trust ensures there is a vast opportunity to instigate and perform research/audit projects.

Education and Qualifications
* Primary Medical Qualification
* Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
* At least 2 years of previous experience working in the NHS
* Foundation competencies or equivalent
* ALS/ATLS
Clinical Skills and Knowledge
* To be clear, fluent and articulate in communication in English
* Good history & examination skills
* Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague
* Experience and interest in the specialty
Maintaining Clinical Competence
* Written evidence of satisfactory training to date e.g. logbooks
Teaching
* Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students & Foundation Doctors
* PGCert MED ED
* Teaching course (training the trainer etc)
* Evidence with teaching QI/research/audit
* Evidence of leadership roles in education
* Demonstrates understanding of Newcastle Medical School Undergraduate Curriculum
* Evidence of contribution to Medical Student assessment
* Evidence of feedback from teaching
* Evidence of contribution to curriculum design (for example, development of course material)
Clinical Governance, Audit and Research
* Experience of undertaking audit projects/ QI projects
* Presentation of completed audit projects at local or national meetings
* Evidence of educational QIP/ research
Communication, Relationships and Working with Colleagues
* Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and other people within a team
* Ability to work as a team with professional colleagues in all disciplines
