Offer description

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Manchester Metropolitan University is seeking to appoint an outstanding Lecturer to contribute to the teaching and continued development of undergraduate modules on our esteemed BA Acting Programme, accredited by the Federation of Drama Schools and housed within the renowned Manchester School of Theatre (MST).

About the role:

Recognised as one of the UK's leading centres of excellence for teaching and research in theatre and performance, MST offers a vibrant, inclusive, and innovative environment for students and staff alike. The school is located in the iconic Grosvenor East building, a stunning £75 million development designed specifically for arts and humanities education. Our facilities include eight large, fully equipped studio spaces and a professionally outfitted 180-seat theatre—providing the perfect backdrop for a transformative performance education experience.

MST currently delivers three distinctive programmes:

1. The conservatoire-style BA Acting
2. The hybrid BA Drama and Contemporary Performance
3. The postgraduate MA/MFA Performance

Our programmes are informed by strong relationships with local, national, and international theatre organisations, providing students and staff with rich collaborative opportunities and real-world connections. Our research culture is equally dynamic, supported by the Performance Research Group, one of the most active and successful within our diverse faculty.

About the candidate:

We welcome applications from individuals interested in developing their academic careers on either our Research, Education and Citizenship (REC) or Education, Practice and Citizenship (EPC) pathways. We're particularly keen to hear from candidates producing either scholarly or practice-led work that complements and enhances our existing strengths.

The successful candidate will bring proven experience in actor training and a genuine enthusiasm for performance education. An ability to teach acting for screen, television, or radio, as well as other elements of drama and contemporary performance, would be a valuable asset.

Manchester Metropolitan University offers a thriving, interdisciplinary community with numerous opportunities for collaboration across the arts. In addition to MST, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities is home to the Manchester School of Art, the Manchester Writing School, and the forward-thinking School of Digital Arts (SODA), which opened in 2021—creating fertile ground for creative partnerships in both teaching and research.

To apply:

If you are ready to help shape the future of actor training in a supportive, ambitious, and forward-looking environment, we would love to hear from you.

For informal enquiries about the role, please contact Dr Aidan Arrowsmith at a.arrowsmith@mmu.ac.uk.

Manchester Metropolitan University fosters an inclusive culture of belonging that promotes equity and celebrates diversity. We value a diverse workforce for the innovation and diversity of thought it brings and welcome applications from local and international communities, particularly those from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, disabled people, and LGBTQ+ individuals.

We support a range of flexible working arrangements, including hybrid and tailored schedules, which can be discussed with your line manager. If you require reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process or in your role, please let us know so we can provide appropriate support.

Our commitment to inclusivity includes mentoring programmes, accessibility resources and professional development opportunities to empower and support underrepresented groups.
