As an Electrical Design Manager, you will be the lead Electrical design resource working closely with our Mechanical Design Lead and the operational project lead within Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick and wider UKCS on interesting and challenging projects. Working in a collaborative environment with our Construction colleagues and external design partners to ensure quality design solutions are provided for our buildings.
This role will cover work on projects across several interesting sectors such as higher education, health, defence, energy etc.
NB. Due to the nature of some of our projects, we require individuals to hold full work rights for here in the UK, coupled with being eligible for Security Clearance.
This role covers the lifecycle of BBK's project portfolio, Gates 1 to 8 of the Gated Business Lifecycle; supporting both Work Winning and Operations from mobilisation to handover.
This role offers flexible working out of our Birmingham or Slough office, along with home and site visits across the multiple projects.
What you'll be doing
* From a Design and Engineering perspective, support BBK bid submissions to deliver a true value proposition to the customer, collaborate with the Preconstruction function to 'get left'.
* Develop strong business relationships with design staff within the wider UKCS Buildings Business, key customers, and design consultant organisations, aligned with the BBK BS strategy, to support, develop and secure additional work.
* Develop collaborative working relationships within Balfour Beatty, where the BB£ can be leveraged to provide: Lean, Expert, Trusted and Safe solutions.
* Review of tender design information and comment in relation to design risk and technical compliance. Provide initiation of Value Engineering ideas. This to involve developing hand marked design solutions to support estimating teams on occasion.
* Liaison with estimating department members to ensure understanding of client's requirements and to review solutions.
* Review key plant and equipment selections at tender stage particularly related to VE or alternative design solutions.
* Develop and agree scope with Line Manager for the engagement of external design consultants and organisation of project agreements.
* Review of project detail design information and comment in relation to technical compliance.
* Provide technical review and monitor performance of external Consultants design throughout various RIBA Stages of the project design delivery, supporting internal project team where issues arise.
* Develop and agree scope with Line Manager and BIM Lead the project CAD/BIM delivery requirements, plus monitoring of delivery during project stage.
* Provide Electrical technical/design support and reviews across the delivery unit where required, supporting other design managers on their projects.
* Understanding of DfMA and applying this to project solutions.
Who we're looking for
* This is a design management role for an individual with proven experience of working successfully within a multi-faceted Design & Technical Engineering function, operating across Sectors and engineering specialisms.
* A relevant professional qualification or membership, in the field of mechanical engineering; ideally the individual will have attained chartered status, although this is not essential.
* Skilled in the management of design development/review, with external designers and customers.
* Good commercial awareness and ability to manage design change.
* The individual will be involved in customer liaison, to ensure that the developed mechanical design achieves the project scope and is in accordance with the Initial Project Brief document.
* Good communication skills, coupled with an ability to form effective relationships with clients, design partners, peers, and senior leadership.
* Experience of working within multiple design teams, understanding and experience in the successful management of RIBA design stages is essential.
* The individual will know 'what good looks like' and will champion Design and Technical Engineering excellence.
* The individual will understand and promote DfMA, BIM and Continuous Improvement initiatives.
* Understanding of sustainable building and MEP systems design in particular relation to Building Regulations and other environmental targets i.e. BREEAM.
* Good understanding of low carbon design solutions and technology - Renewable energy technology / LZC (low zero carbon).
* Understanding of AMTECH software, and the outputs in relation to HV, LV and ELV system circuitry design.
* Ability to generate design reports and design trackers associated with design partners performance.
* A good knowledge of British Standards, IET 17th/18th Edition, codes of practice and other regulatory material.
* A relentless focus on Zero Harm; ensure that safety in design is fundamental across BBK.
