Engages with: Operations Team, Commercial Team, Event Planning & Delivery teams, Contractors, Suppliers, and Exhibitors
Hours per week: 32 hours over 4 days (0800 – 1600) inclusive of one hour paid meal break per day. Full time hours for the month of June.
Our standard working hours are weekdays from 0800 - 1600. However, due to managing the safety of live events, the jobholder must have a flexible approach to work with the ability to cover out of hours and weekend work, in order to support our events calendar. Time off in lieu will be given for out of hours/ weekend working. Further hours required in the lead up to, and during, the Royal Highland Show, for which relevant overtime is payable.

Job Purpose
To support the Head of Operations in ensuring the effective management of health and safety across the organisation and its events. This includes liaising with external clients and contractors to address deficiencies in risk assessments, particularly for events and fire safety, and providing expert advice to plan, execute, monitor, and review protective and preventative measures. The role aims to minimise operational losses, accidents, and injuries, support the implementation of strategic plans, and conduct audits and inspections prior to public events. Additionally, the role focuses on fostering strong client relationships, promoting a safety-conscious culture, ensuring compliance with RHASS standards and legislative requirements, and positively influencing and coaching others on health and safety best practices.
What You’ll Do
Compliance
You will assist in delivering continuous improvement in health, safety, and compliance by contributing to the development of policies and operating procedures. A key responsibility will be ensuring all events present suitable and sufficient risk assessments for their activities and applying Construction Design and Management (CDM) legislation as appropriate.
Communication
In this role, you will provide practical health and safety advice, even in high-pressure situations, and promote safety awareness among colleagues, contractors, and clients. You will consult and agree with the Head of Operations on appropriate responses to issues arising with risk assessments or permits and participate in multi-agency meetings to ensure effective coordination of activities.
Contractor Management
You will liaise with contractors to ensure compliance with traffic management plans and maintenance activities, conducting and managing inductions for contractors as they enter the site. It will be your responsibility to ensure contractors adhere to safety legislation and statutory requirements and to resolve issues amicably regarding risk assessments or permit applications related to ground-breaking activities.
Health and Safety Management
For certain situations you will take charge of event health and safety management. This includes delivering in-depth fire risk assessments and evacuation plans for complex buildings or situations. You will assist the Public Safety Manager in all aspects of show management for the Royal Highland Show and support the monitoring and control of training requirements in collaboration with the Head of Operations.
Qualifications and Skills
* Strong technical and practical skills are essential to support the diverse needs of the venue and the events.
* Technical Knowledge: A solid understanding of Health and Safety Legislation including building management systems such as fire panels, intruder alarms, air handling and conditioning units, electrical services, and lighting systems.
* Event Operations: The ability to support in-house event setups and safety inspections, including configuring barriers, discussing and agreeing room layouts and event spaces.
* Health and Safety Focus: A commitment to adopting and supporting Health and Safety policies, with particular attention to Asbestos and Legionella controls.
* Flexibility and Proactivity: A willingness to participate in the “on-call” team rota when required and promptly report any damage or defects to the Site Coordinator.
* Professional Development: A readiness to undertake any training needed for the role as defined by the Head of Operations.
Skills and Experience
* NEBOSH General Certificate is essential
* Full driving licence as inter-site travel is required
* Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships
* Ability to interpret and apply Health and Safety legislation and policy to adapt as relevant
* Ability to work independently on own initiative with minimal supervision
* Ability to conduct thorough health and safety inspections and audits
* Computer literate and good working knowledge of all Microsoft packages
* Good interpersonal and communication skills
* Ability to collate and present information clearly
* Experience in event safety is desirable
