An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Science Technician to start February 2025.
Hours: 26.5 hours per week term time only (35 weeks per year term time plus 1 week during the school holidays)
Salary: £25,334 FTE (£14,882 Actual pro rata)
Role: Under the direction of the senior Science technician, coordinate the use of practical resources and facilities and provide assistance and advice in meeting the practical needs of the science curriculum, including liaising with teaching staff and support staff outside the department.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Preparation of resources and assembling apparatus.
2. Obtaining materials by local purchase.
3. Giving technical advice to teachers, technicians, and students.
4. Carrying out risk assessments for technician activities.
5. Assisting in practical classes and carrying out demonstrations.
6. To assist the senior technician with the day-to-day organisation and development of the department to ensure that essential performance standards are achieved.
7. To contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of specialist resources and/or long-term projects.
8. Constructing and modifying apparatus.
9. Setting up and caring for plant and animal collections.
10. Preparing standard solutions, purifying chemicals, treating waste.
11. To support the senior technician in ensuring the availability of suitable materials and equipment, helping to compile orders and liaising or negotiating with suppliers and finance departments.
12. Keeping up-to-date records of stock, checking stock, and ordering.
13. Maintaining resources.
14. Under the guidance of the senior technician, ensure that both routine and non-routine checking, cleaning, maintenance, calibration, testing, and repairing of equipment are carried out to the required standard.
15. Collecting, checking, and returning equipment to stores.
16. General laboratory cleaning of bench surfaces and fixed equipment.
17. General cleaning and repair of equipment.

* Checking fume cupboards, pressure vessels, and first-aid kits; carrying out electrical and other safety checks.
* Organising, storing, and checking the condition of chemicals and equipment.
* Attending departmental meetings and All Staff Insets.
