We are a department of 60 consultants and 16 SAS doctors and are now looking for new consultants to join our dynamic and rapidly evolving anaesthetic & chronic pain team at York & Scarborough NHS Foundation Trust.Within the Trust we are part of theSurgeryCare Group, which includes most surgical specialties.
We have a Clinical Director responsible for the Theatres, Anaesthetics and Critical Care directorate (TACC) across the Trust supported by Lead Clinicians for Pain, Intensive Care, Anaesthetics and Theatres.
Surgical services are located principally at two acute hospitals, York and Scarborough.
AtYork Hospitalthere are 12 operating theatres in our main suite (including one dedicated to vascular imaging assisted work). We have a dedicated day unit with 6 theatres and an ophthalmology operating area with two theatres. These are supported by two Post-Anaesthetic Care Units (PACUs). There are also two separate obstetric theatres.
Surgical services currently supported include general surgery (including colorectal and upper GI), orthopaedics and trauma, obstetrics and gynaecology, ENT, maxillo-facial, oral surgery, ophthalmology, urology and vascular. Enhanced recovery programmes are well advanced in colorectal and orthopaedic surgery and are being rolled out in other specialties.
We try to accommodate individual preferences with regards to subspecialties, including obstetrics.
The job plan is a prospective agreement that sets out a consultant’s typical working pattern, duties and responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It will cover all aspects of a consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities and external commitments.
Where possible, consultants are given a choice of working over 4 day or 5 days. We may be able to offer flexibility and accommodate other working patterns. The following is a sample job plan 10 PA job plan worked over 4 days. MDTs vary in terms of timings and days, depending on subspecialisation. A commitment to acute work is expected.
Individual job plans will be discussed with the post holder prior to appointment and will become operational on commencement.
Additional programmed activities may be offered to the post holder, up to a maximum of 2 for full time posts, taking the maximum total to 12.
A core 1.25 PAs of SPA time is provided per week for consultant and SAS grades to ensure on going core professional development and QI work. There is opportunity to increase this amount where need arises.We have opportunities to explore teaching, research, appraisal, leadership roles and quality improvement projects to enhance our service. We strive to support your development, ensuring SPA is allocated within your job plan to achieve this.
Departmental job planning takes place annually, before the new financial year.

We have a 22 bedded Critical Care Unit on the York site with a further 8 at Scarborough. Building work is well underway for a new purpose built acute medical unit at Scarborough which will house a new state of the art Intensive Care and adjoining acute medical high observation unit and CCU.
AtScarborough Hospitalthe main theatre suite comprises five theatres, in addition to which there is a separate maternity theatre.
Anaesthetic services are also provided atBridlington Hospital, approximately 20 miles from Scarborough. The two theatres available provide over-night and day-case surgery. All cold orthopaedics at the East Coast is currently performed here and they have a well-established and successful enhanced recovery programme. Many arthroplasties are done as day cases in this unit.
Elective surgical services at Scarborough currently include: general surgery (including emergencies), trauma, gynaecology, ENT, maxillo-facial, oral surgery, ophthalmology and urology. We now also have a successful and expanding day unit to support this work.
