An exciting opportunity has arisen to cover maternity leave until May 2026 for a Band 5 Occupational Therapist. The post holder will be working alongside senior physiotherapy and occupational therapy colleagues with direct supervision from the B7 OT Team lead.
The Wellbeing service is a small therapy-led team that uses a rehabilitative palliative care approach to provide assessment and interventions for people with a life-limiting condition e.g. cancer, rapidly progressive neurological conditions, and end-stage chronic respiratory and cardiac disease. Interventions are delivered on a one-to-one or group basis to help people manage the symptoms of their condition, maximize their functional abilities, and cope emotionally and psychologically with a deteriorating illness.
Wellbeing is part of the Specialist Palliative Care service providing input across Northamptonshire. Other parts of the service include doctors, clinical nurse specialists, hospice at home, chaplaincy, family worker, and lymphoedema team. There is also a separate therapy team providing physiotherapy and occupational therapy to the inpatient unit and within the community. There will be opportunities within this role to gain skills to support other areas of the therapy team to provide cover during annual leave.
The role will include providing holistic, person-centered occupational therapy and palliative care assessments, interventions, planning, and delivering groups. Areas such as fatigue management, anxiety management, and activity analysis and adaptation are some of the key occupational therapy skills needed in this post. The group sessions are held in person but there may be infrequent occasions where virtual discussions and assessments are required. Someone who is motivated, passionate, and willing to learn would be ideal for this role.
Supervision and support will come directly from the Wellbeing team lead; however, informal supervision and support are also available from other therapists and nurses within the wider team. Non-clinical aspects of the role will include day-to-day caseload management, support, and delegation to unqualified staff, as well as planning, development, and promotion of the service alongside the team.
Wellbeing @ Cynthia Spencer is based at Cynthia Spencer Hospice and was rebranded from the previous day hospice service. This has enabled significant development to a more varied program of rehabilitation-focused groups and individualized interventions.
