Our Planning and Strategic Consulting team, within our Transportation business line, has an exciting opportunity for a Planning Director to lead the delivery of transportation planning and consulting services across the North of England. There are four office bases within this region that generate revenues in excess of $8M. We love that our clients consistently rate us highly for our work in the transportation sector, including business case development for active travel, bus and rapid transit schemes, transport modelling and mobility insights, local transport plans, transport decarbonisation and monitoring and evaluation studies. We deliver high profile, award winning and impactful projects across the North.
In this role, you will have a specific focus on operational delivery, project and resource management, workload pipeline, people management and staff engagement. You will be part of the UK and Ireland Planning and Strategic Consulting Senior Leadership Team and will work with other Regions and our overseas resource capability to maintain a steady workflow and to provide our clients with the best experience. Not all projects are based in UK and Ireland and therefore there will be opportunities to work with our colleagues globally.
Here’s what you’ll do:
Collaborate: Working with a blend of our teams including work winning and other end markets to expand and enhance client relationships ensuring we maintain and grow a healthy future pipeline.
Deliver: The Planning and Strategic Consulting team is involved throughout the lifecycle of transportation and people and place projects from early policy and advisory work through development of strategic, outline and full business cases to assessment and management of developments, stakeholder engagement and the monitoring and evaluation of project outcomes for a range of public and private sector clients. In addition, we support other AECOM end markets where their projects require specialised transportation advisory services.
Oversee: Ensure that we are resourced with teams that have the right qualities to provide the services and standards that our clients expect for current and future needs.
Provide Expertise: Offer technical knowledge and expertise to the project and client teams on all aspects of multi-disciplinary projects.
Ensure Quality: Working through the complexities of our Transportation projects, you will hold our clients’ hands and overcome problems in unison when they inevitably arise.
Key Responsibilities:
The Planning Director North will be accountable for safety, quality, ethics, people management and delivery of the operational performance of this $8M business; specifically, they will:
* Lead by example by visibly driving our Safety, Health & Environmental (SH&E) culture, ensuring effective implementation of SH&E policies and procedures throughout the region, and achievement of our SH&E core value metrics.
* Be Accountable for the Regions performance versus the Financial Year plan and outlook incl. Net Service Revenue, Gross Margin, Cost Utilisation, FTEs and employee turnover.
* Accountable for the robustness of forward pipeline revenues for the North.
* Ensure that the Region has in place the right resource management processes, including collaboration across regions and geographies to optimise project and business performance.
* Maintain a culture where AECOM is recognised as a great place to work by upholding and communicating AECOM’s values (incl. wider social values), championing equity, diversity and inclusion, promoting employee engagement, career development and succession pathways.
* Work alongside the Work Winning team to support client development and growth opportunities through existing contracts, winning new business and optimising return on client account management.
* Apply governance to all regional key pursuit Go/No Go Processes.
* Identify and attract new talent and lead strategic and senior recruitment within the Region.
* Drive change programs to increase efficiency, profitability, and operational quality within and across regions.
* Drive project delivery and commercial excellence, ensuring projects are completed on time, on budget, to the right quality and to the client’s satisfaction.

Here’s what we’re looking for:
You are a highly motivated, organised, and proactive leader with a proven track record in the transport and development planning consultancy industry. Your deep understanding of the UK&I transport and mobility markets, coupled with your grasp of the social, political, and economic drivers that influence it, will be integral to your success in this role. With experience in leading diverse teams in a fast-paced environment, you have excelled in planning, designing, and delivering projects while driving data-led performance improvements. As a leader you will have been responsible for fostering a culture of success, engagement, and development within your teams while ensuring the successful management of projects from inception to completion
* A track record of achieving/exceeding financial KPIs and driving business growth.
* Effective communication, interpersonal, presentation and negotiation skills.
* Flexible and proactive approach and ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
* Experience in leading teams to deliver project outcomes across a wide range of sectors and travel modes from policy and strategy development through appraisal and feasibility to evaluation.
* Demonstrated success in implementing change programs and managing data-driven performance improvements.
* Proven ability to build and retain a diverse and inclusive workforce while nurturing talent development, mentoring and coaching.

* Membership of a recognised professional body (Preferably Chartered).
* Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate discipline.
