The department of Blood Sciences is seeking to expand its senior management team to deliver high-quality integrated care to our patients, in keeping with the Trust's wider vision. This post will also support the move to our new Pathology building (Centre for Laboratory Medicine) on the St. James's University Hospital site and the new Acute Hospital Laboratory (AHL) on the Leeds General Infirmary site, in spring 2025. The successful candidate will have full operational responsibility for the Clinical Biochemistry service. Reporting to the Service Manager, they will work collaboratively with other key scientific and clinical staff to deliver a 24/7 Blood Sciences service across both the Leeds General Infirmary and St. James's University Hospital sites.
This opportunity is offered as a full-time fixed term post for a period of six months.
Main Duties of the Job
Key responsibilities include:
1. Operational responsibility and managerial oversight of a large multi-site and multi-disciplinary department.
2. Lead on governance and training related activity, accreditation, and regulatory requirements.
3. Line manage a large multi-disciplinary team of Biomedical Scientists and other scientific and admin staff.
4. Management of a delegated budget for the Blood Sciences service(s) and represent the department as an authorised signatory for amounts governed by the Trust's standing financial instructions.
5. Contribute towards overall service development through active participation and leadership in a range of people governance procedures consistent with Trust policies and ongoing projects as part of the BtLW programme and as part of the WYATT and NPP network of clinical laboratories.
You will be registered with the HCPC, have gained an MSc (or FIBMS equivalent) and have several years experience as a Biomedical Scientist working at a senior level (Band 7 or above). A management or leadership qualification is desirable, as is significant experience of Clinical Biochemistry. As Service Lead you will be required to lead on the transformation of our services as part of the wider Trust strategy and part of the BtLW programme of work. You will take a lead with all departmental HR, governance and operational activity, as part of the Blood Sciences senior management team.

Our Pathology services operate across two large university teaching hospitals (Leeds General Infirmary and St. James's University Hospital) in the Leeds Metropolitan area with a population of around 2.3 million and provide services both regionally and nationally. The Department of Blood Sciences has a very engaged multi-disciplinary senior team and a well-developed quality management system. The successful candidate will be well supported by the wider scientific and clinical teams. The Blood Sciences Department is accredited to ISO15189 and by the IBMS as a training laboratory in both Clinical Biochemistry and Haematology.

1. To manage an integrated and co-ordinated specialised testing service for Leeds Hospitals, local and regional CCGs and the provider to provider referrals services for all clients.
2. To participate in general departmental management and people governance procedures such as staff recruitment, induction and appraisal.
3. To undertake highly specialist clinical technical investigations for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease.
4. To communicate highly complex and/or sensitive information relating to the provision of the clinical service.
5. To contribute towards the training of support, technical, scientific and medical staff. As a core member of the CSU operational and governance committees to interpret and advise on national policies directives and guidance in this specialist field. Attendance at external meetings held by our clients where the post holder will be required to represent LTHT to promote our service offering and provide expert advice.
