The Havens CYP 0-19 team is recruiting an Adolescent Nurse 1.0 WTE to join our dedicated multi-professional team.
The Havens are London's Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) based in Camberwell, Paddington / Ladbroke Grove and Whitechapel. They are jointly commissioned by the London Mayor's Office for Policing & Crime (MOPAC London) and the National Health Service England (NHS England) and provide a 24/7 service, offering care to individuals disclosing rape or sexual assault. This care may include forensic medical examination, adolescent clinics for acute/follow-up medical care, and support through counselling, psychology, and Independent Sexual Violence Advisors.
Main duties of the job
Subject to successfully completing their probationary period and training, the Adolescent Nurse will take on a key role in supporting the Havens Adolescent Pathway. This will involve:
* Providing guidance to partner agencies, such as parents and carers, emergency departments, children's services, GPs, CAMHS, sexual health providers, and law enforcement, on management options for young people presenting after sexual assault.
* Supporting and maintaining a 'Centre of Excellence', providing emotional, practical, and safeguarding support to children and young people following serious sexual assault/abuse, including forensic medical examination, adolescent and child sexual abuse clinic appointments, addressing contraceptive and sexual health needs, and referrals to ongoing support services.
* Representing and advocating for adolescents by attending multidisciplinary team (MDT), departmental, and external meetings.
* Supporting young people and professionals by helping them navigate systems related to recent sexual assault or non-recent sexual abuse.
* Supporting the CYP Haven teams with the delivery of a seamless and robust 0-19 acute and non-acute service.
* Maintaining a safe environment and working as part of The Havens' multidisciplinary team alongside children, young people, safe parents, carers, and their support networks to ensure that their needs are properly understood and met.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

* Consider potential challenges related to drug and alcohol issues, learning difficulties, mental health, and other psychosocial factors during assessments.
* Assess safeguarding needs and initiate a clear plan of action, including referrals to external agencies and the Trust safeguarding team.
* Process referrals and manage telephone inquiries efficiently.
* Conduct timely welfare calls to adolescents following forensic medical examinations.
* Maintain accurate databases for the CYP Haven service.
* Attend multidisciplinary team (MDT), departmental, and external meetings, promoting the voice of adolescents.
* Manage appointments and coordinate room bookings.
* Process and prepare clinical documents and resources across CYP medical, advocacy, and nursing sectors.
* After completing training, take the lead in guiding the Havens Adolescent Pathway, providing advice to partner agencies on management options for young people presenting after sexual assault.
* Liaise with police, self-referring clients, and other referrers to initiate appropriate courses of action for victims of sexual assault.
* Communicate sensitively and effectively when dealing with difficult and distressing issues, ensuring appropriate liaison with young people, social care, police, and other personnel in challenging situations.
* Act as a crisis worker during forensic medical examinations, advocating for clients, aiding in the collection of forensic evidence, and ensuring effective forensic decontamination.
* Provide advice on the prevention of pregnancy and prophylaxis against sexually transmitted infections, including HIV and Hepatitis B.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
* Current NMC Registered Nurse (adult, mental health) or Midwife.
* Evidence of current continuing professional development.
* Recognised qualification/training or relevant experience in contraception and sexual health and evidence of associated competencies.
* Non-medical prescribing course or experience in supply of medication via PGD.
* Teaching or mentorship qualification or equivalent.
Knowledge and Experience
* Experience and competence to work with young people.
* Clinical experience managing clients with complex needs.
* Relevant experience of clinical nursing practice in a sexual health/contraception setting or of working in ED/Urgent Care Centre.
* Experience of working in partnership with multi-professional teams.
* Knowledge of current developments in nursing, particularly in sexual assault services.
* Detailed knowledge regarding safeguarding issues (adult and child), the statutory frameworks that apply, experience of managing safeguarding issues, and ability to act upon concerns.
* Experienced and competent in clinical history taking, examination, and diagnosis.
* Experience of conducting clinical audits.
