NOTE: When applying, if you are not based within a reasonable commuting distance from Falmouth, please state clearly how you intend to be available to work from our office, or your application will be rejected. We are a small agency, and re-screening all applicants is, unfortunately, not viable. Thank you for your understanding.
We are looking for a friendly, talented web developer to help us build new sites and maintain our existing ones. You will join our team of 6 (designers, developers and administrators) and share responsibility for all aspects of devising, building and maintaining websites for our clients. From complete site builds to configuring hosting environments, we want someone who is interested in making beautiful things that work. You will have proven experience in building sites, whether at an agency, in-house or as an independent.
Technology
Most of our sites are built in WordPress – because it’s great. We know, we’ve seen rubbish WordPress sites too – that’s not what we do. We build bespoke themes from scratch, use plugins only when trusted or necessary and have developed our build processes to make sites that are as efficient to work on as they are to load. WordPress is a great CMS, but not without its faults – like any tech stack, so we’re also always looking at new technologies, front-end frameworks and CMS’ we can incorporate into our workflows and builds.
This is a job for a developer who will be working in code to build bespoke themes, not dragging and dropping with a theme builder (Divi and Elementor, we’re looking at you). Maybe you use these tools now and have the skills to leave them behind, or maybe you a Gutenberg native... if you're interested and adept we want to hear from you.
You’ll be writing SASS, HTML, Javascript and PHP, as well as helping us decide our tech stack of the future.
Open to...
This role is available to anyone who has had any experience building websites. We value talent as much as experience, so we are open to people at any point in their career, as long as they have had some experience with building things for other people.
Minimum requirements
* Passionate about code. We can’t stress this enough.
* Some experience building websites – ideally with PHP, JavaScript, WordPress (Gutenberg), SASS, LEMP stack, working with APIs and maintaining local testing environments.
* Excellent communication and problem solving skills – with experience responding to briefs and working with designers and clients or project managers.
* Able to interpret designs into fluid, responsive and dynamic websites.
* Able to learn code fast and adapt to new languages, frameworks, and methods of working.
* The ability to manage your own workload, prioritising and juggling various jobs at a time.
* Excellent interpersonal skills. This should really be at the top of the list; being able to work as part of a team in a busy environment with good humour and a positive outlook is a must.
* Positive interaction with clients and providing support and advice in an easy to understand way.
Bonus Points
* Above average PHP, WooCommerce, Gutenberg etc, competent ES6 or back-end development skills.
* Experience building bespoke themes.
* Ability to build integrations with APIs.
* Experience setting up server environments and managing hosting.
* Surprise us! Extra skills are always appreciated, however tangential.
Team Collaboration:
* Foster a collaborative and positive team environment.
* Share knowledge and contribute to the growth and success of the team.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including designers and copywriters, to execute projects through pro-active and positive communication.
* Able to hybrid work at least 2 days a week from our spacious, central Falmouth office
