BMW Group Plant Hams Hall is a modern, state-of-the-art engine manufacturing facility, located just outside Birmingham, UK. Producing the latest generation of three and four cylinder petrol engines, and precision machining key engine components, the plant has recently celebrated 20 years of successful production. Operating seven days a week, with more than one engine rolling off the line per minute, the plant plays a key role in BMW Group’s global production network, supplying engines for BMW and MINI, including some of the latest plug-in hybrid vehicles.
BMW Hams Hall, Birmingham – Material and Process Analysis Internship - 13 Month Placement (July 2025)
The TI-341HH department coordinates and delivers material and process analysis requests and project activities as dictated by business requirements and production needs. The main focus is on chemical and metallurgical analysis.
The team consists of three specialists and an apprentice in Hams Hall with a manager based in Oxford who has responsibility for teams in Hams Hall, Oxford and Swindon.
What awaits you?
1. Complete chemical analysis as well as metallurgical analysis as required.
2. Perform failure analysis to understand root causes and recommend solutions.
3. Work with other departments to refine existing processes.
4. Undertake quality assured work to ensure specifications are met.
5. Complete improvement tasks and projects, either as part of a larger team or on own.
Qualifications and Experience
6. Studying towards a bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Mechanical or Automotive Engineering with Chemistry / Materials modules and on track to achieve a 2:2 or above.
7. Be able to undertake a large programme of self-directed work.
8. Basic experience in using analytical equipment would be preferable.
9. Preferably have a full driving licence as there will be the chance to make use of the excellent existing network within the UK (Oxford, Swindon and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars at Goodwood) with visits and support.
10. Good material knowledge and basic chemistry knowledge.
11. Customer orientated focus.
12. Good communicator.
13. Self-assured and self-sufficient.
