Job Description
Writing Our Legacy wants to commission two freelance socially engaged Black, Asian or ethnically diverse/BPOC artists and one BPOC community group/organisation based in East Brighton, Lewes and Hastings for a new outreach project. The focus of this project is storytelling. This call-out is to writers and those working in the visual arts, sound art, textiles, filmmaking, broadcast and other art media.
Project Partners
The project is led by Writing Our Legacy CIC and is working with Diversity Lewes, Brighton University, and other partners. Lewes FC Community Garden and South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) support this project. The project partners will collaborate with community producers to co-design the project and share our academic/arts-informed storytelling processes with them.
The National Lottery Community Fund and Arts Council England are the project funders.
Fee & Commissioning Details
Please note for all roles, fees will include travel and consumables. Workshop materials will be provided by Writing Our Legacy.
Freelance Artists
2 BPOC artists based in East Brighton, Lewes and Hastings
32 hours @ £50 per hour each = £1600 from Feb-Dec 2025
Each artist will co-develop/facilitate 6 workshops between Feb-Dec 2025
Community Partner
1 BPOC community partner based in Hastings
32 hours @ £50 per hour = £1600 from Feb-Dec 2025

Job Responsibilities
Working collaboratively with project partners Writing Our Legacy, Diversity Lewes, and Brighton University, the commissioned artists and organisation will:
* Co-produce and co-deliver 12 monthly storytelling and placemaking workshops in East Brighton, Lewes and Hastings aimed at people of all ages and backgrounds including families (venues and dates TBC).
* Attend two partner meetings for support with the design and detailed planning of workshops and participate in 3 sessions for group evaluation.
* Produce/contribute to end-of-project creative outputs such as a collaborative book, mural/visual installation, podcast or short film, collaborative map of their local area across East Sussex.
* Participate in the end-of-project exhibition and final celebration event (September 2025).
The work will be delivered according to a partner schedule with a quarterly fee for invoicing.
Workshop Dates
Workshop dates for 12 sessions across East Brighton, Lewes and Hastings are TBC.
