The Office of Voluntary Sub-Warden – Harry French Hall
A promising opportunity has opened up in the Harry French Halls of Residence for an individual to commence a 12 month, fixed term sub-warden appointment. Applications for this career-building opportunity are invited from doctoral researchers only – ideally with a substantial amount of time remaining on their programme. Furthermore, applicants must already be living in Halls within a 5 minute walking distance of Harry French.
The Hall: Harry French Hall is an idyllic community hidden in the leaves just off-campus on Ashby Road. The Hall is unique in attracting both undergraduate and postgraduate students to its Unite owned grounds enabling students to enjoy a more diverse community that prides itself with the best of both campus and town, as well as domestic and international students.
Duties: Harry French Sub-Wardens assist the Warden in the day to day running of the hall. This may involve pastoral, disciplinary and administrative duties as well as being involved in social aspects of hall life. The successful applicant will be part of a team which provides out-of-hours emergency cover in a hall of almost 400 students, fostering a positive student experience.
Personal Attributes: Candidates must display a high level of personal organisational ability, excellent communication skills, good administrative ability, leadership qualities and be a good team player. Sub-Wardens are expected to demonstrate a commitment to the community spirit of the Hall, spending roughly 14 hours of work towards the role on a weekly basis.
Accommodation and Catering Arrangements: Free accommodation is available throughout the year subject to the continual fulfilment of shifts. Typically, accommodation available for Sub-Wardens is only suitable for a single person. Harry French is a self-catered, however some meals are provided during term time through the diners+ scheme.
Get to Know the Role and Team: The successful applicant must be available to attend Sub-Warden training sessions as required ( First Aid Training, Annual Sub-Warden Training), typically taking across September. It is highly recommended that prospective candidates research to understand the role and the lifestyle changes it requires. You will be welcomed to meet the Harry French Warden Team on Thursday 10th April in the Graduate House (with MS Teams availability too) at 6-7pm. If you would like to attend, please complete this by 9th April 2025 at 6pm. Please note, this session will not be recorded.
Application Procedures: Applicants should complete and submit the following documentation to the Interim Warden, Mr O Haruna () by email by midnight on Tuesday 15th April 2025 (11:59pm):
4. The Office of Voluntary Sub-Wardenship .
5. An accompanying 1-2 page letter outlining suitability for the post.
6. Two written references (PhD Supervisors, Director of Studies / Line Manager, Head of Section).
Interviews will take place during the evening in the week commencing 21st April 2025. The successful candidate should be ready to start their duties in the week commencing 5th May 2025 or earlier.
In addition, the successful applicant will be required to take a day away from their studies on Monday 22nd September 2025 to assist the Warden’s Team during Harry French’s First Years Arrivals Day.
