City Archaeologist

Background
Do you have the ambition and ability to play a key role in managing York's unique archaeological resource?
The City of York Council has an exciting fixed term full-time opportunity during a period of planned staff leave. You will join a team of professionals specializing in building conservation, urban design, architecture, landscape design, ecology, countryside management, and protected trees.
You will provide the principal source of expertise within the City of York Council for archaeological matters in relation to planning and development across the city on a wide range of schemes. A key component of the post is the development and maintenance of the City of York Historic Environment Record.
Key skills and responsibilities
You will need substantial knowledge and field experience in urban and rural archaeology. You will also need substantial experience of assessing the archaeological impact of development proposals, negotiating with developers and archaeological consultants.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone educated to post-graduate qualification level in Archaeology, Heritage Management or equivalent, and/or someone who has the equivalent on-the-job experience. Membership of the Institute of Field Archaeologists is desirable but not essential.

Hybrid working arrangements are available for this role. Each role at CYC is different and your working arrangements will be determined based on the requirements of the role and in collaboration with you and your needs as part of the recruitment process. Your contractual location will be the designated council office for your team.
As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C2: Can express themselves spontaneously at length with a natural conversational flow, avoiding or backtracking around any difficulty so smoothly that the person with whom they are conversing is hardly aware of it.
