JOB ROLE
General Practice Assistants (GPAs) form part of a multi-disciplinary team within primary care and provide a support role, carrying out administrative tasks combined in some areas with basic clinical duties. This helps to free up GPs' time and contributes to the smooth running of appointments, improving patients' experience in the surgery. The role aims to:
1. Improve patient access and release highly qualified staff to concentrate on treating and managing patients with more complex conditions.
2. Improve patient flow within surgery hours, increasing the time efficiency of appointments and reducing waiting times.
3. Support patient experience by translating or reiterating information from the GP.
4. Have a positive impact on retention and job satisfaction.
5. Reduce time spent by GPs on managing correspondence.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
As a GPA, your responsibilities will include:
1. Checking and monitoring the practice's incoming emails received in the NHS Email account and responding to patient inquiries.
2. Sorting all clinical post and prioritising it for the GP in terms of actions, signposting some post to others such as the clinical pharmacist.
3. Extracting information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding it to patient notes.
4. Arranging appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-up appointments for patients.
5. Preparing patients prior to their GP appointment by taking a brief history and basic readings.
6. Dipping urine, taking blood pressure, performing ECGs, and conducting phlebotomy.
7. Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign, such as insurance forms, mortgage, and benefits agency forms.
8. Explaining treatment procedures to patients.
9. Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies, e.g., getting an on-call doctor on the phone for advice or arranging admission while the GP continues with their consultations.
10. Supporting the GP with immunisations and wound care.
