As audiences shift from linear to digital and streaming platforms, we are looking for a Deputy Editor who will help oversee our growing coverage offer both on a day-to-day and long-term basis. You will be up for the challenge of continually developing what we do and how we do it.
Job Introduction
BBC News Streaming is a team playing a key role in driving the digital transformation of BBC News, in a rapidly changing - and innovative - part of the news landscape.
Our vision is to be the leader in news streaming, by delivering a relevant and compelling offer across live and on-demand content that showcases the best of BBC News on iPlayer and our other platforms.
This role reports into the Executive News Editor for Streaming, who you’ll work with to lead coverage from the two teams that make up Streaming: Live and On Demand.
Day-to-day, you will support the Live Editor with delivering single story live streams of breaking and developing stories and planned events from the UK and around the world. These streams run on multiple platforms: iPlayer, BBC News live pages and BBC Sounds. From spring 2025, UK-focused streams will also run on the UK feed of the BBC News Channel. There has been big growth in consumption of our single story live streams and the Deputy Editor will play a key role in ensuring high quality, compelling coverage and helping to evolve our offer to audiences.
Our On Demand team commissions and produces a range of mid to long form news content, made for iPlayer first but are also available to run on our linear channels, including the News Channel.
From April 2025, the On Demand team will be responsible for the back half hours that run on the Channel at weekends. Working with the News Editor for On Demand, the Deputy Editor will play a key role in managing the relationship between the Channel and other teams to ensure smooth operations, while also signing off On Demand content when required.
Away from the day-to-day, the Deputy Editor will also have responsibility for overseeing Streaming coverage of special events and key stories across Live and On Demand, working closely with output teams, iPlayer and Marketing to produce relevant and compelling content that is promoted effectively to audiences.
The Deputy Editor will deputise for the Executive News Editor and will work closely with them to execute the strategic vision for the team. Our content is published on iPlayer, Sounds, live pages, the News Channel and beyond - so the ability to build effective working relationships with a range of people in teams in News and across the BBC will be key to success in this role.
You will be agile and organised – comfortable working across both live and on-demand output and their different demands and able to juggle overseeing on-the-day news with longer-term projects.
