We are a very busy 2 partner training GP practice with a friendly, experienced team of staff. We are looking to recruit a Dispenser/Pharmacy Technician at Kineton and Tysoe Surgeries on a permanent contract (or 2 x part-time). The position will be between 18 and 36 hours (depending if full or part-time) plus extra hours when needed to cover leave. You will work at both Kineton and Tysoe branches, so own transport is essential.
The successful applicant must have a current UK dispensing qualification minimum of level 2 NVQ and at least 1 year of experience of working in a dispensary. You must be accurate, self-disciplined, pay attention to detail, be able to prioritise workload, work well under pressure, be able to multi-task, work well alone and as part of a team, follow standard operating procedures, adhere to confidentiality rules at all times, have good communication skills, be computer literate, be confident in your ability but know your limitations, and be flexible and able to cover extra shifts when needed.
Main duties of the job
To work as part of the dispensing team to provide a safe, accurate, effective and efficient dispensing service to patients on behalf of the practice. To be confident and capable of working independently and as part of the team. To adhere to the practice's Standard Operating Procedures, confidentiality policy, local/national regulations, COSHH and Health and Safety policies at all times.
About us
We are a busy semi-rural Dispensing GP Practice. The main surgery is in Kineton CV35 0LP (12 miles from Leamington Spa, Warwick, Banbury and Stratford upon Avon) and the branch Surgery is in Tysoe CV35 0SE.
The Practice is owned by 2 GP Partners Dr Jenny Layton-Henry and Dr Raj Kanwar. We are a training Practice so have GP Registrars and Medical Students too, and we have 3 salaried GPs.
We dispense to approximately 5400 of our 6900 patients. The Dispensary can be very busy; we have a team of 5 Part-time Dispensers, 5 Part-time Dispensary Assistants and a Dispensary Manager.
Job Responsibilities
Job Title: Dispenser
Reports to: Dispensary manager / Practice manager
Responsibilities:
1. To interpret prescriptions and dispense medication accurately and safely as prescribed by the doctors, including repeat and acute prescriptions.
2. To endorse the prescription form with any necessary endorsements needed to receive appropriate payment from the Prescription Pricing Department.
3. To have an understanding of drug names and their recommended doses and intercept any potential prescribing errors.
4. To ensure all prescriptions have been signed by a prescriber.
5. To follow the accuracy checking process thoroughly when checking items dispensed by yourself or another dispenser.
6. To maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
7. To give patient advice/counselling about their medication within your knowledge capabilities and refer them to GP if needed.
8. To respond to patient enquiries efficiently and courteously, passing on accurate and relevant information to the appropriate people.
9. To maintain dispensary stock levels and ensure good stock rotation.
10. To ensure dispensary sundries are kept replenished and re-ordered when necessary.
11. To order drugs from appropriate wholesalers or specials manufacturing companies and be aware of which products come from which suppliers.
12. To ensure all items are stored safely and in the correct conditions.
13. To ensure all repeat prescriptions are issued and dispensed within the 48-hour window.
14. To collect all due prescription charges and ensure the patient declaration on the back of the FP10 is filled out correctly and signed.
15. To ensure all Dispensary charges are entered accurately into the cash register and receipts are issued for each transaction.
16. To accurately cash up daily and weekly takings and rectify any discrepancies.
17. To ensure that all audit trail record sheets are completed.
18. To take immediate action with product recalls or drug alerts.
19. To be involved with training and offer support to new or less experienced team members.
20. To unpack deliveries promptly, ensuring stock is accurately checked off against invoices.
21. To file invoices appropriately or pass to Finance Clerk if payment is needed.
22. To follow Wholesalers returns processes for items supplied/ordered incorrectly.
23. To ensure Fridge lines and Controlled drugs are stored accordingly and the necessary documentation completed.
24. To make entries in the controlled drugs register and check the running total.
25. To count and sort signed prescriptions separating Paid for and Exempt from prescription charges.
26. To keep up to date with any changes or new procedures in both the Dispensary and the Practice.
27. To accurately record details of any Dispensing errors found and pass the information on to the Dispensary Manager.
28. To monitor patient compliance and notify GPs or nurses of non-compliance.
29. To notify patients of any changes to their medication or if they are due to be reviewed.
30. To liaise with wards/clinics/medical secretaries to access up-to-date information regarding patients' current medication.
31. To read and sign Standard Operating Procedures annually.
32. To complete necessary modules on the E-learning website annually.
33. To attend training as appropriate and record any training undertaken.
34. To attend team and Practice meetings when required.
35. To liaise with GPs and nurses as required.
36. To keep the dispensary clean, tidy and well-organised at all times.
37. To monitor and record the Dispensary ambient temperature, Controlled Drugs cupboard and Fridge temperatures.
38. To take appropriate action if any temperatures fall outside the accepted range.
39. To follow practice procedures and policies at all times.
40. To have an understanding of and be able to carry out reception duties as needed.
41. To carry out any other duty which the Practice Manager or Partners may reasonably request.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Qualified to minimum NVQ level 2 in Pharmacy/Dispensing
* Previous experience of working in a dispensary or pharmacy (minimum of 1,000 hours total work experience is essential)
* GCSE Maths and English
* Previous experience of working in a Dispensing GP Practice - not essential as training will be provided
* Knowledge of Emis Web
* Work well under pressure
