Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The appointee, in collaboration with the other consultants and senior scientists, will be expected to fulfil the following duties within the agreed Job Plan:
1. To provide a comprehensive clinical and liaison Microbiology service to the following:
* Clinicians at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
* Named specialties by agreement within the service, for example provision of Microbiology input to MDTs as appropriate.
* General Practitioners and other healthcare providers in the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care System.
1. To provide Infection Control doctor duties for the acute Trust or primary care. This includes the involvement in investigations of outbreaks of infectious disease and liaison with the UK Health Security Agency where appropriate.
2. To be involved in the training of Specialty resident doctors (including educational and clinical supervisor roles where required), Trust Grade doctors, and scientific staff.
3. To contribute, as required, to the teaching of Microbiology to undergraduates within the School of Life Sciences University of Nottingham and teaching for junior and senior medical colleagues within specialties across the trust.
4. To take part in Audit and Quality Improvement within the department, supporting other specialties with this as appropriate.
5. To maintain a programme of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) with the Royal College of Pathologists (or equivalent scheme) and to participate in the annual Consultant appraisal and revalidation processes.
6. To contribute to Clinical Governance to meet the requirements of the clinical service and to maintain UKAS accreditation.
7. To liaise with the UK Health Security Agency in the provision of clinical and epidemiological data to support public health provision.
8. To participate in the development of new Microbiological and molecular diagnostic techniques to meet the increasing demands of clinical users.
9. To participate as appropriate in day-to-day Infection Prevention and Control activities and antimicrobial stewardship activities for the acute NHS and the Greater Nottingham health community. The designation of the Infection Control doctors for the acute trust and primary care, Antimicrobial Stewardship lead Consultant, Clinical Laboratory Leads, Training Programme Director and Clinical Governance lead is by mutual agreement between the Head of Service and the other consultant Microbiologists and is reviewed every 3 years or earlier if required.
10. Share in the administrative duties associated with the running of the clinical service.

Training & Qualifications
Essential criteria
* Full GMC registration Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register or CCT in Microbiology (or expected within 6 months of interview date).
* Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview).
* Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
* Evidence of continuing professional development (existing consultants must be able to demonstrate active participation in a recognised CPD scheme).
* MRCP or evidence of equivalent training and experience.
* FRCPath in Medical Microbiology by examination or evidence of equivalent training and experience.
Desirable criteria
* Higher qualification e.g. MSc / MD / PhD.
* Health Care Infection Society Foundation Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control or equivalent.
* Fellowship in IPC.
Clinical Skills/Experience
Essential criteria
* Evidenced technical and clinical skills as described in the job description.
* Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals.
* Experience of working within antimicrobial stewardship, infection control, or similar multi-disciplinary infection teams.
* Demonstrates good written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable criteria
* Specific training in communication skills.
* Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors.
* Experience in delivering high quality presentations / written work.
* Oral or poster presentations at IPC conferences (ESCMID, FIS/HIS or equivalent).

* Higher degree/qualification/ specific training in clinical leadership or management.
* Experience in managing change in service delivery of a clinical and/or diagnostic microbiology service.
* Experience of leading an antimicrobial stewardship, infection control team, or similar multidisciplinary infection team.
* Evidence of leadership in quality improvement / clinical audit / clinical governance.
Personal Skills/Qualities
Essential criteria
* Able to work flexibly in a changing health service.
* Able to use the Trust's IT support systems.
Teaching, Audit & Research
Essential criteria
* Evidence of participation in Clinical Audit and /or Quality Improvement.
* Demonstrates experience in undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching.
* Able to teach junior staff effectively.
Desirable criteria
* A good record of original research publications / peer reviewed publications.
* Specific training in clinical or educational supervision.
* Specific training in quality improvement or clinical audit.
* Specific training in medical education and/or higher degree in medical education (e.g. PGCert, MSc).
Practical Requirements
Essential criteria
* Ability to travel between City Hospital Campus and Queen's Medical Centre Campus.
