This is an exciting time to join the medical Same Day Emergency Care team at Darlington Memorial Hospital as we continue to improve the service and experience for patients requiring emergency medical care. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, dynamic and highly motivated Registered Nurse that will see in excess of 30 patients passing through each day, with an emphasis on faster initial assessment and decreased overall length of stay.
Main duties of the job
You will work closely with our experienced and friendly consultant team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the medical emergency patient's care, providing first-line treatment. Having your own cohort of patients and working closely with the multidisciplinary team, you will be able to treat patients promptly, effectively, and efficiently, allowing for an excellent patient experience.
The dependency of patients and service users, along with their presenting clinical conditions, varies daily within medical SDEC. Staff nurses within medical SDEC are required to be dynamic and flexible in accordance with the varying needs of the patients within the department. The staff nurse is required to ensure that patients are rapidly assessed and their nursing plan of care is documented, communicated, implemented, and evaluated at regular intervals during the patient's stay. The nurse will ensure that any concerns, issues, or conditional changes are escalated early to ensure patient comfort and safety is maintained.
Job responsibilities
1. To assess patients' needs and develop, implement, and evaluate programmes of care.
2. To organise the delivery of nursing care, deploying staff effectively.
3. To be aware of, and communicate to team members, changes to patient information and treatment plans, both verbally and in writing.
4. To adhere to NMC standards of record keeping.
5. To assist the Unit Manager in setting, monitoring and maintaining standards of care.
6. To participate in nursing audit and service improvement activities.
7. To be aware of resource constraints and the importance of working within budget.
8. To provide advice and act as a role model to other members of the team.
9. To be proactive in managing risk and maintaining patient safety.
10. To supervise the work of nursing support staff, ensuring tasks undertaken have been delegated appropriately.
11. To contribute to the day-to-day management of the Directorate, cooperating with colleagues to provide an appropriate level of nursing service and to address bed management issues.
12. To participate in education and training of junior staff.
13. To involve patients/carers in the planning and delivery of care.
14. To participate in clinical supervision.
15. To assist in resolving conflict and defusing situations where appropriate.
16. To promote a positive and professional image of nursing at all times.
Person Specification
Special Skills & Knowledge
* Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
* Awareness of Health and Safety / Clinical Governance issues.
* Basic IT skills, including e-mail and word processing.
* Evidence of Continual Professional Development.
* Experience in venipuncture & cannulation.
* Immediate Life Support certification.
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse (Level 1) with current NMC registration.
* High standards of nursing care.
* Teaching and assessing qualification or equivalent.
Special Requirements
* Able to travel across Trust sites to meet the requirements of the post.
* Effective communication and customer care skills.
* Reliable.
* Enthusiastic.
* Able to work under pressure.
Experience
* Experience in nursing.
* Recent experience caring for acutely unwell medical patients.
Statutory Registration
* Registered nurse with valid NMC PIN.
