Job Summary
An opportunity has arisen for a trainee plaster technician to join an established team covering services across three main sites, supporting a comprehensive range of orthopaedic and trauma speciality clinics.
The post holder will be accountable for all aspects of care requiring plaster casts/splints/braces whilst under the supervision of qualified staff.
To undertake and participate in statutory training and in service programme.
To participate in annual personal review being consistent of service needs.
To undertake British Orthopaedic Association Casting Course after a minimum of twelve months experience in the Plaster Room.
Please be aware The British Orthopaedic Association Casting Course is held in London +/or Bradford. Qualification can be achieved via two training routes, a day release over a six month period in Bradford or a six week residential course in London. All final exams are held in London.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will work closely with qualified Plaster Technicians to carry out prescribed treatments while demonstrating evidence based practice and complying with the British Orthopaedic Association guidelines.
Trainees will also learn in-depth anatomy and physiology to ensure safe and effective practice.
Trainees will be accountable for providing casting and splinting support within clinics as requested, while also giving support and advice to the patient and carers to enable optimum treatment and enable self care.
Job Responsibilities
Trainees will work within their own limitations and contribute to the smooth and effective running of the Plaster Room. Trainees will work under the direct supervision of the management team and work in compliance with local policies and procedures.
Workload will be allocated from clinics, Accident and Emergency and theatres and the extent of this will differ daily. Therefore it is important to be able to manage a caseload of patients, while ensuring effective and efficient utilisation of resources.
This role involves working across three sites to cover the needs and demands of the service therefore a degree of flexibility is required. Communication is an integral part of this role.
Complex information will be received from Consultants and communicating with patients by providing advice pertaining to their fracture and casting management and to enable them to manage their own care needs.
Documentation is paramount within this role, therefore interpreting and recording information accurately into patient notes to ensure the correct care is given and acted upon in future is important as well as a knowledge of the IT systems.

Qualifications Essential
1. A Level / NVQ level 3 qualification or equivalent demonstrable knowledge and experience.
Desirable
1. Knowledge / experience of Orthopaedics and Trauma.
Experience Essential
1. Broad experience within the hospital care sector.
Desirable
1. Experience within Trauma and Orthopaedics and/or A&E minor injuries.
