Therole:
The JI Collections arecomprised of the John Innes Archives (the definitive collection ofover 300 years of history relating to the Innes Family, plusInstitute and scientific records from 1910 to the present day), andthe Special Collections, including the JIF Rare Books (a valuablecollection of books dating back to 1511), the History of GeneticsLibrary and the annotated libraries of William Bateson and CyrilDarlington.
As a qualified archivist, the postholder will manage the collections, and lead projects, programmesand activities to enable engagement with and use of the collectionsby internal and external users. You will also be confident indeveloping and delivering collaborative engagement and outreachactivities related to historic collections and ideally have a keeninterest in the history of science.
The postholder will primarily work independently but is embedded in theJohn Innes Centre’s Communications and Engagement team who willwork collaboratively to deliver events and engagement activities.The post holder will have close links to the Norwich BioscienceInstitutes Library team. The role will include processing newaccessions, managing and updating a digital catalogue and managingexisting collections.
The Archive Curator andOutreach Co-ordinator will share insights from the collection withthe world and encourage others to access and use them. We envisagethat this role will require significant on-site working in Norwich,with options for some hybridworking.
The idealcandidate:
We are looking forsomeone with the skills and knowledge to proactively manage anddevelop the Collections, including the introduction of born-digitalrecords relating to the organisation history and ‘life at JIC’ intothe archive. This will require new
systems to beset up and integrated with teams across the institute andexternally to ensure that the Collections are accessible to thepublic.
The ideal candidate will have a formalqualification or equivalent experience in digital preservation anda formal curation or archiving qualification or equivalentexperience gained in an archive, library or similarsetting.
They will have demonstrable knowledge ofphysical and digital preservation, with the ability to apply thisto meet archival requirements and contribute to solutions. Theideal candidate will also have experience of working on researchprojects and making evaluations, knowing what information tocollect, and where to find it and how to disseminateoutputs.
The ideal candidate will also havenotable experience as a digital archivist, curator or museumprofessional and experience in participating in collaborations withexternal partners.
