Mental Health Occupational Therapist MH OT
One Ellesmere Port Primary Care Network (PCN) is a collaboration of the 6 GP Practices from across the town. Working together at scale to develop better services for our patient population of approximately 72,000 patients.
Whitby Health Partnership is a core member Practice of the PCN and the second largest Practice.
The successful candidate will be employed by and based at Whitby Health Partnership focusing on their patient population. They will join a valued and existing team of 5 Mental Health Occupational Therapists, who are based across the other surgeries within the PCN. This team meets regularly which allows peer support, and best practice sharing.
Main duties of the job
As the Mental Health Lead for Whitby Health Partnership, you will provide specialist advice and support to both colleagues and patients. This includes first-contact assessments for patients with mental health needs, developing individualised treatment plans, and offering further MH OT interventions or signposting to appropriate services.
Key responsibilities include:
* Assessing functional capacity for holistic treatment
* Supporting recovery and independent living skills
* Symptom management and coping strategies
* Liaising with GPs and MH teams
* Navigating referrals between primary and secondary care
The role bridges the gap between IAPT and secondary care, ensuring appropriate referrals and collaborative working across the system. The successful candidate will manage a hybrid model of in-person and telephone appointments, including urgent assessments as needed. They will independently manage their caseload and appointment book with team support.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* BSc in or pre-reg MSc in Occupational Therapy under a training programme approved by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists
* Is a registered member of the Health and Care Professionals Council
* Is able to operate at an advanced level of practice
* Clinical experience or leadership qualification relevant to the role
* Evidence of Postgraduate or master's qualification relevant to role

* Clinical Knowledge: Strong understanding of mental health disorders and their impact on daily functioning.
* Therapeutic Techniques: Proficiency in evidence-based interventions like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), sensory modulation, and coping strategies.
* Assessment and Problem-Solving: Ability to assess functional limitations and develop creative, practical solutions to improve the clients quality of life.
* Communication Skills: Effective communication with clients, families, and other healthcare professionals.
* Empathy and Compassion: Ability to work with vulnerable populations and offer support in a non-judgmental, empathetic manner.
* Organisation and Time Management: Ability to manage multiple clients, prioritise tasks, and maintain accurate documentation.
* Crisis Management: Capacity to manage urgent mental health situations, such as self-harm or severe anxiety.
Experience
* Successful candidate must evidence they hold experience of working across a variety of mental health settings.
* Experience of assessing an individual's mental health needs, developing individualised care plans to help meet assessed need, including further MH OT intervention or signposting to more appropriate services.
* Experience of implementing evidence-based practice for assessed needs.
* Experience in assessing, monitoring and documenting risk, including safety planning and liaison with appropriate services.
* Experience of being able to work autonomously within a high-paced environment, effectively managing caseloads and prioritising responsibilities, while supporting others to do the same.
