An opportunity has arisen for a motivated and experienced mental health nurse to join our mental health liaison service at Harrogate District Hospital.
We are a 24-hour service who provide assessment and intervention to people over the age of 16 presenting at the Emergency department where mental illness is known or suspected as a core presenting problem or a consequence of comorbid illness. We work in tandem with the Acute Trust to identify, assess and treat a patient's needs - mentally and physically - to improve the patient journey and work toward better outcomes and recovery.

Main duties of the job
You will be an active member of the leadership team; clinically leading the team, supporting with service improvements and operational duties when required. Delivering caseload management, clinical supervision, staff training will be a core aspect of the role alongside delivering direct patient care, advanced nursing approach and evidence-based practice. As clinical nurse Specialist you will create and maintain good working relationships with our key partners to support clinical pathways and processes that need a wider MDT approach.
Job responsibilities
1. Liaising with staff in the acute hospital, supporting them with the management of the mental health and well-being of patients who have been admitted for physical health care, but who require support with new or existing mental health need.
2. Being professionally accountable and responsible for giving specialist advice and support to facilitate the mental health care given to patients in the acute hospital.
3. Presenting the views of patients and carers to the clinical teams in the acute hospital to facilitate collaborative working between all parties.
4. Liaising with other professionals and agencies in the facilitation of a safe and effective plans of mental health care.
5. Liaising with other professionals and agencies in the development and facilitation of safe and effective discharge plans - reducing hospital lengths of stay and readmission.
6. Enhancing knowledge and skills in the field of mental ill health for staff employed in acute hospital through the provision of specialist advice and training.
7. To be the professional lead for nurses in the designated specialty, leading on professional development and ensuring the delivery of robust evidence-based practice.
8. To lead the establishment of systems that support the development of clinical practice, to ensure that the developments are embedded within the team and are sustainable.
9. To ensure high professional standards of nursing practice in accordance with the NMC code of Conduct, with professional accountability to the Nursing and Governance Directorate.
10. To lead the planning, implementation and participation in training and educational activities relevant to Practice Development for nurses in the designated specialty.
11. To support the ward or team manager and other senior clinical staff in establishing and maintaining high standards and continual improvement within the established governance framework.
12. To undertake ongoing audit of care and service delivery, underpinned by research, evidence-based practice and the liaison team Key performance indicator objectives and outcomes.
13. To coordinate and deliver clinical supervision to support all nursing staff within the area of responsibility.
14. To provide nurse led diagnosis and treatment planning.
Person Specification
Knowledge
* Extensive knowledge of current issues relating to health needs of patients in the field of practice, regionally and nationally.
* Understanding and working knowledge of the legal framework and statutory obligations under the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act.
* Detailed understanding of Safeguarding and its application in practice.
* Clinical Risk Assessment and Management and its application in practice.
* Clinical Governance and its application in practice.
* Working knowledge of clinical medicines management.
* Understanding of psychological models of care and treatment (depending on specialist area).
* Team culture, leadership and management knowledge.
Experience
* Significant experience working with patients with complex needs in the specialist field.
* Significant experience working with patients who display risk behaviours.
* Clinical risk assessment and management and its application in practice.
* Working collaboratively with service users their families and carers.
* Working in a multi-disciplinary team.
* Quality improvement activities.
* Change management and leadership experience.
Qualifications
* Current Professional Registration with Nursing and Midwifery Council - RMN / RNLD.
* Recognised Practice Assessor/Practice Supervisor or currently in progress of achieving.
* Trained in Clinical Supervision and providing Clinical Supervision or in the process of achieving.
* Postgraduate diploma in a subject relevant to the area Or be willing to work towards and achieve within 2 years and Within the first year of being in post hold a recognised qualification in a governed therapy/advanced clinical qualification e.g Intermediate Systemic Family Therapy/Post Grad diploma in CBT/British Isles Dialectical Behaviour Therapy /NMP (Independent Prescriber).
* Equivalent clinical experience to that of a Post Grad Diploma/master's level such as working as a band 6 (or above) in relevant clinical area with significant experience, together with evidence of relevant CPD.
* Experience of working within a range of services, including inpatient and community settings.
* Leadership and management training.
