I work with couples where one or both individuals identify as neurodivergent. I also work with individuals, parents and adult children, siblings, and other platonic relationships.
The issues that clients usually bring are the impacts of communication differences and mutual misunderstandings, such as trauma responses of shutting down, losing words, or melting down, which may be experienced as rejection, the cold shoulder, or scary temper tantrums by a partner. It’s difficult to feel safe in situations like this, making it challenging to maintain desire for each other and hope for the future.
I am trained in an approach known as Imago Relationship Therapy, which emphasizes safe communication.
The approach:
1. Is structured and easily learned for use between sessions.
2. Provides space to think, hear, and process what you hear.
3. Provides the powerful experience of being heard, understood, or validated by your partner. The feeling that someone ‘gets you’ can be rare for many of us who identify as neurodivergent, especially if we were missed/misidentified growing up.
4. Involves you and your partner consciously creating a joint plan for your life together.
5. Enables you to move beyond your comfort zones, which possibly involved masking, to a more authentic intimacy and a deeper love.
If this resonates with you, get in touch, and let’s discuss your needs, wants, and desires for your relationship.
