Service Delivery:
1. Medical care provision to babies & children within the Paediatric Unit on GH site.
2. Participate on the medical Tier 1 rota.
3. Attend Delivery suite for high-risk deliveries.
4. Initiate, lead and supervise resuscitation of compromised infants, children & young people as required in accordance with the Local and National Guidelines.
5. Communicate sensitive and complex information to parents.
6. Examine and assess babies, children and young people, instigate appropriate management if required (e.g., organizing OPD appointments) and give consent to discharge.
7. When requested, assess babies, children and young people which require medical intervention.
8. Initiate clinical management, having established a differential diagnosis, and arrange appropriate treatment, or referral.
9. Diagnose and initiate treatment plans and evaluate the response to the treatment.
10. Provide ongoing management and seek senior advice when clinically indicated.
11. Deliver complex high-level interventions autonomously.
12. Act as an expert resource to the multidisciplinary team.
13. Perform, request, monitor and interpret investigations. Take appropriate follow-up action in accordance with local unit guidelines, seek advice from consultant as necessary within limits of personal expertise.
14. Assess, plan and implement individual medical care plans, in collaboration with other members of the multi-disciplinary team. Evaluate progress, advise care management when appropriate, and document daily progress in the medical notes.
15. Write precise, accurate and timely records, letters, reports and statements in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
16. Perform discharge examinations of infants, children and young people and liaise with General Practitioners and other members of the Community Care Team as appropriate.
17. Develop and maintain effective communication with parents and families. Ensure documentation of communication.
18. Undertake diagnostic and therapeutic procedures appropriately, adhering to written protocols and guidelines:
* Venepuncture and capillary blood sampling
* Percutaneous arterial blood sampling
* Peripheral and umbilical venous cannulation and removal
* Insertion and removal of percutaneous central venous catheters
* Peripheral and umbilical arterial catheter insertion and removal
* Withdrawal of blood from indwelling arterial catheters/cannulate
* Insertion and removal of endotracheal tubes
* Lumbar punctures
* Insertion of chest drain/needling of intra-pleural space
* Administer newborn Immunisations
* Intra-ventricular tap
* Cold Light Examination of the chest
* Urinary catheterization
* Requesting and interpretation of Chest and Abdominal X-rays
1. Prescribe drugs in accordance with the BNF Children's & Neonatal Formulary.
2. Provide written instructions for blood components as per guidelines.
3. Develop specialist care packages during clinical ward rounds, both receiving and providing complex case presentations.
4. Participate in local audits.
