Job Overview:
We are one of the largest criminal defence law practices in the South West of England. We have offices in Bristol, Cheltenham and Bath, helping people throughout the South West.
We are seeking a Dedicated Police Station Clerk to provide legal advice and representation to the Firm’s clients at the police station and other locations where appropriate.
This is a full time role, based in our Bristol city centre office.
Key Responsibilities:
* To undertake matters which you are competent to conduct having due regard to the policies and procedures defined in the Office Manual.
* Taking client instructions, providing legal advice and assistance to clients of the firm who are in custody at the Police Station including out of hours.
* Undertaking the above duties with regard to LAA regulations and requirements
* Preparing attendance and case notes in respect of Police Station attendances, subject to office procedures.
* Dealing with client enquiries and providing Police Station telephone advice and assistance where appropriate.
* Proactively administering an efficient bail back diary.
* Maintaining knowledge and skills through legal training and research including undertaking sufficient CPD hours each year.
* Maintain sufficient Police Station attendance to allow for continued accreditation.
* Fee earn on all criminal defence files where required, under the supervision of a solicitor.
* To ensure that all work carried out meets or exceeds the requirements of the LAA’s Standard Criminal Contract, the Lexcel Standard and the Solicitors’ Code of Conduct.
* Risk management – to notify the Risk Manager in the event of a new instruction having a high risk profile; report any suspicion of money laundering to the MLRO; inform the Risk Manager if there are any unusual circumstances in the progress of a matter and notify the Risk Manager if a concluding risk assessment highlights the possibility of a complaint or claim. Abide by GDPR and our policies on personal data.
* To record all work carried out accurately and appropriately on the firm’s computerised time recording system

Education/Qualifications:
* Has successfully completed all assessments of the LAA’s Police Station Accreditation course.
* Current member of the LAA’s Police Station Representatives Register
Experience/Skills:
* Substantial post-accreditation experience, or at least 2 years experience as a fee earner.
* A demonstrable enthusiasm for criminal law
* Police station advice experience
* Experience of managing own case load effectively, particularly in a pressurised environment
* Experience of liaising with the police and interpreters
* Willingness to provide back up help for out of hours police station work
* IT literate in the use of MS Office, Outlook and case management software (preferably Law Fusion)
* Demonstrates a willingness to assist with the marketing of the Firm to prospective clients.
* Experience of working to the Law Society’s practice management standard, Lexcel and/or the LAA’s Specialist Quality Mark (SQM)

Pay: £24,000.00-£28,000.00 per year
