The Role:
Hoist Finance, a leading financial services company committed to innovation and excellence, is seeking a motivated Junior Database Administrator (DBA) to join our team in Manchester. You will work closely with our Database Lead, gaining hands-on experience with SQL Server and Azure SQL Database in a production environment. This is an exciting opportunity to develop your career in database administration while working on modern cloud-based technologies. The role may also involve cross-skilling with the Azure operations team where appropriate, providing exposure to broader cloud infrastructure and operations.
1. Assist in the administration, maintenance, and performance tuning of SQL Server databases (on-premise and Azure SQL Database).
2. Support database backups, restores, and disaster recovery processes.
3. Monitor and troubleshoot database issues, ensuring high availability and performance.
4. Implement security best practices.
5. Support database deployments, patches, and updates in collaboration with the Database Lead.
6. Help design and optimise queries, indexes, and stored procedures.
7. Work with development teams to ensure efficient database structures and best practices.
8. Gain exposure to Azure services such as Azure SQL Database, Azure Storage, and monitoring tools.
9. Assist in documentation of database processes, procedures, and policies.
Skills and Experience:
1. Basic experience with SQL Server (including writing queries, stored procedures, and indexing).
2. Understanding of database administration tasks such as backups, restores, and monitoring.
3. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
4. Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
5. Eagerness to learn and develop in a DBA role along with building your Azure knowledge.
6. Exposure to Azure SQL Database or other cloud-based databases.
7. Some knowledge of Azure services such as Virtual Machines, Azure Monitor, or Azure Storage.
8. Experience with PowerShell or other scripting for database automation.
9. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices related to databases.
Location and Working Hours:
This is a full-time role located in our offices in MediaCityUK, Salford, Greater Manchester, where the successful candidate will be required to work at least two days a week. The successful candidate will be required to work 37.5 hours a week, Mon-Fri.
