Maternity Support Workers (MSW) act as members of the care team working under the supervision and guidance of registered midwives and other professional staff.
MSWs assist in the planning, implementation, evaluation, and delivery of care by providing support to registered staff, patients, and their families. This will be achieved by the performance of specific care tasks carried out after the successful completion of a programme of formal training and assessment. The key role of the MSW will be to provide breastfeeding support to newly delivered mothers in the community setting.
Main Duties of the Job
This position is to be based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital Brighton, but some cross-site working may be required. Maternity Support Workers are to act as members of the care team working under the supervision and guidance of registered midwives and other professional staff.

Job Responsibilities
1. Provide breastfeeding advice and support to mothers in accordance with Trust policies.
2. Following appropriate training, assist in the delivery of care to women and their babies under the direction of a registered midwife.
3. Help to reinforce Health Education advice to women.
4. Respect the need for privacy and dignity.
5. Report any change in the condition of the mother and baby to the registered midwife.
6. Report all incidents, complaints, enquiries, or accidents to the midwife in charge/Team leader.
7. Assist in the collection of maternity notes and any other administrative duties.
8. Ensure equipment is in a safe and clean condition, reporting defects to the midwife in charge.
9. Adhere to Trust infection control policy.
10. Maintain high standards of personal appearance in accordance with Trust Uniform/Non-uniform Policy.
11. Participate in the allocation of care at team level.
12. Receive and pass on messages and information.
13. Assist with the intra/inter departmental transfer of women and their babies.
14. Assist with training and supporting new Maternity Support Workers.
15. Assist the midwife with specific errands/tasks.
16. Contribute to raising awareness of public health issues e.g. smoking/passive smoking.
17. Provide information and advice to parents of newborn babies.
Person Specification
Experience
* Experience/Knowledge of supporting new parents with breastfeeding.
* Experience/Knowledge of working in a patient-facing healthcare role.
* Full UK driving license.
* Must have achieved A*-C grade in English and Maths at GCSE Level.
* Experience of working with babies and families.
* Completed or working towards Care Certificate for healthcare assistants.
Skills
* Good written and spoken English.
* Understanding of own development and training needs.
* Approachable, friendly, and outgoing.
* Effective interpersonal skills and ability to use own initiative.
* A desire to care for new parents and babies.
* Ability to access and use computerised data.
* Basic IT Skills.
