Fitter – Job Description
About this Position
This is a contract role, likely to be a rolling 6-month contract. The position involves on-site and workshop-based work, with UK-wide travel required to support installation, commissioning, and refurbishment projects.
Job Responsibilities
Main Function of the Role
The fitter will be responsible for the installation, commissioning, maintenance, and refurbishment of transformers and associated equipment. The role requires strict adherence to health and safety policies and customer-specific site requirements. The fitter will work closely with senior site supervisors, engineers, and project managers to ensure high-quality work, compliance with regulatory standards, and complete customer satisfaction.
Main Duties
* Carry out all tasks in accordance with health and safety policies and customer site-specific requirements.
* Perform on-site installation, commissioning, and refurbishment of transformers and related electrical equipment.
* Ensure finished work meets design specifications, industry regulations, and customer expectations.
* Conduct mechanical maintenance and fitting work, including:
* Oil sampling and analysis.
* Replacement of instruments and ancillary equipment.
* Re-gasketing operations.
* Work on low, medium, and high-voltage electrical networks, both above and below ground.
* Perform transformer refurbishments to Distribution Network Operator (DNO) standards, including paint protection.
* Assist senior site supervisors in recording on-site data for project managers to compile commissioning reports.
* Read, understand, and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings.
* Maintain excellent attention to detail and work efficiently under pressure.
Experience Required
Qualifications & Skills
* GCSEs (or equivalent) required.
* Electrical/Electronic City & Guilds Apprenticeship (minimum 2381, 2391 or equivalent).
* Transformer experience is essential – candidates must have hands-on experience in maintenance, installation, or commissioning.
* Site installation/fitting experience in a power engineering environment.
* Knowledge of power engineering plant and equipment, including transformers and reactors.
* Experience with transformer commissioning, including:
* Insulation resistance testing.
* Transformer ratio and vector group checks.
* Current Transformer (CT) testing (preferred but not essential).
* Ability to read and interpret mechanical/electrical drawings.
* Valid driving licence – willingness to travel extensively across the UK.
* Desirable qualifications: IPAF, PASMA, Manual Handling, First Aid, Site Safety Passports (training provided if required).
