Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join our friendly, enthusiastic, innovative, and hardworking team of paediatric orthopaedic surgeons within a leading tertiary paediatric centre, rated good by the Care Quality Commission. The Paediatric Orthopaedic team at Birmingham Children’s Hospital provides secondary level paediatric orthopaedics services to the children and young people of Birmingham, and tertiary care to those in the wider region and beyond. In addition, we support the care of children with complex health needs, working closely with colleagues from other specialties.
This post represents an expansion of the substantive paediatric orthopaedic team to meet increasing demand. You will be joining a group of seven established Paediatric Orthopaedic consultants. The team includes two foundation year doctors, four Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioners, four middle grade trainees from the Birmingham Orthopaedic Training Program, a Trust Grade doctor, two Paediatric Orthopaedic Fellows, a CESR trainee from an adjacent region, and a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
Clinical experience
* Training and experience in paediatric orthopaedics, both elective and trauma.
* Paediatric Orthopaedic Fellowship of at least 6 months duration.
* Post CCT level experience in the orthopaedic management of children with neuromuscular disorders and foot and ankle disorders.
* Experience in the orthopaedic management of children with arthrogryposis (essential) and spina bifida (desirable).
Main duties of the job
The Paediatric Orthopaedic team provides secondary care including outpatient, urgent care, and inpatient services to a catchment population of 450,000, representing approximately 45% of the population of the City of Birmingham. Our clinical work offers huge diversity, encompassing the full breadth of paediatric orthopaedics, including both elective and trauma, with the only exception currently being pelvic fracture fixation.
Birmingham Children’s Hospital is the Paediatric Major Trauma Centre for the West Midlands. The department welcomed the arrival of colleagues from the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Paediatric Orthopaedic Oncology Service and the Paediatric Spinal Deformity service in 2019.
We pride ourselves on the high quality of our clinical care, leadership, quality improvement and innovation, pastoral development of a multi-professional team, and - above all - on our team-working and cohesion.
The post holder will be based at Birmingham Children’s Hospital but must expect to hold regular elective clinics, and possibly theatre lists, at one or more of the surrounding hospitals to whom we provide outreach services. They will participate in the 1 in 8 on-call rota at BCH where, in addition to their elective work, they will undertake regular weekday morning Fracture Clinics and Trauma Lists.
