Description
The Yard Supervisor is responsible for the yard operational activities and team of operatives involved in the storage and movement of all goods in and out of Wallows Lane yard.
To ensure all preparation, loading and unloading activities are carried out safely and efficiently, to supervise the yard team and ensure good housekeeping is always maintained. Complete and contribute to audits and stock checks when required.
Working as part of the depot operations team and providing full operational support to all areas of the business as required.
Key Responsibilities:
Equipment Hire
- Enter asset number information and confirm hires in the system.
- Load delivery vehicles using system generated paperwork.
- Ensure all external haulers have the relevant delivery paperwork and BCS drivers are loaded with allocated deliveries only.
Equipment Returns
- Receive off hired equipment into the depot, unloading, recording, and checking paperwork for accuracy of plant numbers etc.
- Transfer information from the paperwork supplied to the returns register for processing, highlighting any queries or issues with the administration team.
- Check equipment for damage and highlight to the Workshop Team Leader.
- Ensure all equipment is returned into the correct returns area.
Service & Maintenance
- Prepare non mechanical plant for hire cleaning down, painting and checking ready for hire.
- Complete workshop jobs for all non-mechanical plant, ensuring service and maintenance work completed, detailing all labour and parts used.
- Document work completed on system generated service checklists and hand in for scanning.
- Support the Hire and Tunnelling operations with various duties including cleaning down equipment and painting.
Other Duties
- Key holder for the barrier system in the depot, accepting vehicles into the yard ensuring a banksman is provided for all reversing and drivers follow the sign in procedure.
- Slinger/signaler duties for loading/unloading.
- Receive paperwork from the yard and/or logistics team for goods received and scan to the Quality Team for processing.
Commercial
- Maintain accurate stock levels within the system by ensuring orders are picked accurately.
- Report stock issues and highlight where customer orders could potentially be delayed.
- Complete stock audits as requested, feeding back to the Operations Manager and Quality Team.
- Support the business during annual stock checks.
- Ensure that all expenditure is within the company budget requirements.
Quality
- Ensure works are carried out in accordance with processes.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by providing suggestions and feedback to Management.
- Work to agreed timescales updating the Operations manager on progress. Maintain good communication with other Team Leaders and Management at all times.
- All orders are to be wrapped, banded, and packaged as per delivery method.
Team Leadership
- Oversee the yard duties to ensure they are completed in a timely manner.
- Develop and motivate staff to ensure they achieve maximum performance.
- Provide accurate, objective, and helpful feedback.
- Ensure all tasks are completed as required during annual leave and absence.
- Assist with toolbox talks and team briefings.
HSEQ
- Responsible for HSEQ standards for your relevant business unit, managing compliance in all areas, Production, review and authorising of all RAMS and SSOW.
- Responsible for ensuring that the organisation meets all agreed health and safety legislation and objectives that are appropriate for your area of management to include risk mitigation and that control measures are in place.
- Responsible for risk assessment creation, review, monitoring ensuring all tasks are covered including activities outside normal working protocols.
- Attend HSEQ meetings with operational teams, ensuring all issues are documented and actioned.
- Provide consistent and accurate HSE advice to the team, Identifying any gaps in skills.
- Complete timely investigations for all accidents and incidents, keeping relevant management up to date on progress following the BCS HSEQ reporting structure. Identify root cause and communicate closure as required.
- Support in the Production and communication of safety alerts following incidents to promote learning and prevention.
- Support the communication/Delivery of monthly TBT themes.
- Set an example for team members of commitment to health and safety activities.
- Support HSEQ advisor to comply with our environmental requirements and share best practice.
- Support wider HSEQ team on environmental and Quality matters. This includes supporting the preparation for external audits including ISO14001, ISO50001.
- Support our long-term Carbon strategy linked to our Be Sustainable Be Green Plan.
- Support with the development and delivery of internal environmental and Quality training.
- Identify environmental/Quality good practice for inclusion in Company communications.
- Monitor and review environmental/Quality performance data to drive improvements.
- Undertake joint site inspections and audits with the wider Regional HSEQ Team members.
- Support the Head of Business unit & the wider team during incident investigations to maximise lessons learnt and implement improvements.

Person Specification:
The successful candidate is likely to meet all the following criteria:
Essential
- Previous experience working in a Yardman role in the plant hire industry or similar.
- Previous experience loading and unloading light and HGV vehicles.
- Driving licence
- Computer literate
- Attention to detail and ability to follow procedures.
- Ability to lead and work well within a team, offering support to others
Desirable
- Product knowledge of plant, tools, specialist kit and tunnelling equipment
- Forklift licence
- Previous experience as first aider and fire warden
