Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* To implement, monitor and evaluate the implementation of the nursing strategy.
* To provide a safe clinical environment for the delivery of high quality nursing services ensuring practice improvement initiatives are implemented and monitored.
* Work collaboratively with the Director of Nursing and their deputy on relevant nursing issues.
* To lead the patient safety agenda, chairing PSG, keeping abreast of all incidents and associated decision making, representing the directorate at inquests.
* To provide nursing expertise and advice for the services.
* To work with the management and clinical team within the directorate to facilitate and provide expert nursing advice and support.
* To conduct high level investigations.
* Provide professional nursing advice at disciplinary hearings ensuring professional nursing standards are upheld.
* Work with the management team to ensure the efficient use of nursing staff and advise on safe and appropriate nursing levels.
* To work closely with the management team to drive forward integration and to take the lead with the collaboration of integrating healthcare with other local providers.
Leadership responsibilities:
* To lead the directorate nursing council group.
* To provide professional expert advice and support to colleagues and others.
* To provide nursing leadership to senior nurses within the borough.
* To work with HR and operational managers in the recruitment of nursing and workforce development for the borough.
* To act as an expert role model, educator, mentor and supervisor.
* To identify areas of good practice in order to offer opportunities for shared learning and mentorship.
* The post holder will be a key member of the directorate leadership team and involved in multi-professional service development activities.
Training, research and development:
* To support the development of nursing research writing for publication and audit across the borough.
* Devising appropriate methods for disseminating evidence-based nursing practice.
* To ensure access to in-house support and training for nursing staff is available.
Quality Assurance:
* To be responsible for the overall quality of nursing care within the service, evaluating and monitoring this through nursing indicators and a programme of regular review and audit.
* Ensure excellent communication systems and necessary relationships are in place, so staff are involved in decision-making and informed about those decisions.
* Ensure there are effective systems in place to support the meaningful involvement of patients and carers in service development and delivery.
* Participate in the senior manager on-call rota.
This is a leadership position and the post holder will be able to work autonomously in decision-making forums. The post holder will command the authority and have the confidence to work independently with senior staff in other agencies, including representing the Trust in London-wide/national forums.

Communication
The post requires an exceptional standard of written and verbal communication skills. The post holder will effectively communicate complex information (for example, the outcome of a serious incident investigation to an inquest) to a range of people, including senior staff in the Trust and other agencies, clinical/practice staff, users' carers and other stakeholders, in a range of national, London-wide, local and internal forums.
The post holder will need to effectively communicate within forums where communication may be difficult or contentious and to ensure that the interests of the Trust are promoted and protected at all times.

Essential criteria
* Registered Mental Health Nurse.
* Degree in Nursing.
* Masters in related subject.
Experience
Essential criteria
* Minimum of five years at senior level.
* Experience of leading nursing practice.
* Experience of Community Mental Health.
