Locum Consultant in Cardio Thoracic and General Radiology

Applications are invited for the above full time post for this 660 bedded acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000. The appointment will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions of service for the 2003 consultant contract (England).
This an exciting time to join the Imaging department at Luton & Dunstable Hospital, which has now merged with Bedford Hospital to form the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The Imaging department has been rated excellent and well led by the CQC and an exemplar unit by GIRFT.
We are looking for a candidate who has expertise in both cardiac and thoracic imaging including performing of lung biopsy. Cardiac MRI expertise is highly desirable to support this newly developed service at the Luton site.
The successful candidate will join three other thoracic radiologists who participate in the weekly lung cancer MDT and perform CT guided percutaneous lung biopsies at the Luton site.
The successful candidate would be required to participate in the general radiology workload at the Luton & Dunstable hospital and participate in the on call rota at Luton and Dunstable hospital currently 1:19 rota. Home working is supported across both sites. All consultants have home reporting equipment including voice recognition software.
Main duties of the job
The Key tasks for the role of Locum Consultant in Cardio Thoracic Imaging:
* Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all patients presenting to the Hospital.
* To deliver a high quality diagnostic imaging service.
* To share, with colleagues in the Imaging Department, the management of all patients referred to the Trust.
* To participate in the delivery of on-call.
* To participate in teaching and training of specialist registrars grade, junior medical staff, radiographers, nursing staff and medical students. In addition the post holder will support Clinical Nurse Specialists and sonographers.
* To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
* To have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD).

Job responsibilities
Bedfordshire hospitals imaging department is a friendly and cohesive team offering a high quality patient centred service with a broad range of specialities across the 2 sites.
The candidate needs to work well in a team, is dynamic and wanting to develop and grow the service. Flexibility to work cross-site is also desirable to support the services across both sites.
Weekly cancer and benign MDTs are held at Luton along with a monthly Interstitial Lung Disease MDT. The successful candidate is expected to participate in the MDT rota.
The trust is currently part of the lung cancer screening programme. The successful candidate is expected to participate in the delivery of this service, which includes reporting CT images and participating in targeted MDTs.
Participating in the general radiology workload is essential and participation in other MDTs is encouraged and subject to agreement with the clinical director during job planning.
The formally merged department has established links with Bedford hospital, and flexibility for cross site working is necessary and will be positively encouraged and supported. We recognise the importance of collaborative working and will encourage the successful applicant to continue to develop beneficial links with other local Trusts.
Over the years the imaging department has been proactive and innovative in developing new ways of working. This is to help support staff wellbeing, increase departmental productivity and to deliver high quality services for our patients.
The allocation of programmed activities will be based on 8.5 for direct clinical care and 1.5 for supporting professional activities. The detailed job plans will be agreed in consultation with the Clinical Director, with the approval of the Medical Director and Chief Executive or his/ her representative.
The pattern of work may change in the future to meet local changing needs and annual review meetings will take place in line with the new Consultant Contract, job planning and appraisal arrangements.
Person Specification
Training
* Training and experience equivalent to that required for UK CCT (or within 6 months of it being issued).
Registration
* Entry on GMC Specialist Register in General Radiology or eligibility to enter it within 6 months from the time of the interview and hold a Licence to Practice.
Qualifications
* MB ChB or Equivalent
* FRCR
* MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research
Clinical Experience
* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in General Radiology.
* Expertise in all aspects of Thoracic Imaging including percutaneous lung and pleural biopsy.
* Expertise in Cardiac CT imaging and reporting. To be able to conduct a cardiac CT list independently and report Cardiac CT independently
* Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and delivering service without direct supervision.
* Any 2nd Subspecialty training. Non-vascular interventional would be considered highly desirable
* Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Imaging Cardiac MRI expertise (reporting and supervision of cardiac MRI imaging) Additional sub specialty interest (urology, paediatric and non-vascular interventional)

* An interest which improves the core clinical service for patients using the imaging service at the Trust.
