Job Description:
The Assistant Headteacher will support the Headteacher in the school’s journey towards excellence.
Core purpose of the role:
1. Working with the headteacher and wider leadership team to identify priorities and opportunities for school improvement to achieve excellent outcomes.
2. Ensuring high standards of behaviour across the school.
3. Ensuring high quality pastoral care across the school.
4. Ensuring the best possible support services for students.
5. Promoting excellence, challenge and high expectations for all students.
6. Modelling professional behaviour and promoting high expectations.
7. Sustaining and developing a professional community that enables others to achieve through effective relationships.
Duties and Main Responsibilities:
General Duties and responsibilities:
1. To carry out the duties of Assistant Headteacher as set out in the current School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions (Wales) Document.
2. To assist the Headteacher, other members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and the Governing Body in providing outstanding strategic and professional leadership and management.
3. As a member of the SLT, the Assistant Headteacher will share in the responsibilities and duties of the senior leadership team at the school and undertake any activity as directed appropriate by the Headteacher.
4. Work with the Headteacher and SLT to embed, monitor and evaluate high quality pastoral care across the school.
5. Assist in leading the school with its vision.
6. Demonstrate the school’s vision and values in everyday work and practice.
7. Support the process of school improvement through continual self-evaluation and use this to inform the school development plan.
8. Drive a culture that promotes aspiration within the school community and celebrates success and achievement.
Managing the School:
1. Line manage pastoral leaders in line with appraisal and performance management.
2. Have expert knowledge of national priorities, issues and changes.
3. To work with, and be accountable to, a wide range of stakeholders including students, parents, carers, cluster schools, governors and the local community.
4. Develop a collective ethos in the school that enables everyone to work collaboratively, share best practice, celebrate success and accept responsibility for outcomes.
5. Create a culture and ethos of challenge and support where all pupils can achieve success and increase their life chances.
6. Use a range of evidence bases, including national data comparisons, where appropriate, to monitor, evaluate and improve aspects of the school.
7. Ensure individual staff accountabilities and responsibilities are clearly defined, communicated, understood and agreed.
8. In conjunction with the Headteacher, develop and implement suitable quality assurance systems which are fit for purpose.
9. Present a clear, coherent and accurate account of performance to a range of audiences including the LA and Consortia.
Pastoral Lead Role:
1. To be responsible for ensuring the strongest culture of safeguarding across the school, working alongside and supporting the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
2. To be responsible for ensuring high standards of behaviour across the school.
3. To be responsible for delivering high quality pastoral care and safeguarding across the school, setting a strong ethos and culture of respect in line with the aims of the school.
4. To be responsible for the effective deployment of PDG funding to ensure that educational gaps between FSM and non-FSM students are narrowed or eliminated.
5. To be responsible for effective analysis of student data to support the work of pastoral colleagues and to improve attendance.
6. To be responsible for the delivering the best possible support services that meets the needs of the learners.
7. To line manage pastoral leads and pastoral staff.
8. To promote opportunities for and encouraging participation of all pupils in a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including culture, sport, the environment, and citizenship.
9. To contribute, as appropriate, to the teaching in the school.
10. To encourage and engage in sharing good practice.
Strengthening the Community:
1. Provide a comprehensive and holistic approach to the needs of children, and their families and the communities in which they live.
2. Encourage and engage in collaboration between all interested parties including the LA, the regional consortia.
3. Encourage and engage in collaboration with other schools.
4. Develop strategies to encourage parents and carers to support their children’s learning.
5. Ensure that the school plays a central role in the community.
6. Identify and respond to the needs of the local community through an appropriate range of provision and activities throughout the year.
7. Ensure that there are close working partnerships with the local community and that the pupils, staff and governing body have a good understanding of the wider aims of the school and its place within the community.
