Environmental Health Technical Officer - Port Health
35 hours per week

We are seeking a qualified and suitably experienced person to help deliver our environmental health services to the people and businesses of Orkney.
Reporting directly to the Service Manager, you will have responsibility for a busy and varied caseload of environmental health work throughout Orkney, focusing primarily on port health services. You will plan and undertake inspections and visits to vessels of all types, taking the necessary actions to provide advice, guidance, and support to ensure compliance with the law and that risks to health are appropriately managed.
Good working knowledge of port health legislation is required, along with the confidence to manage your own casework and conflicting demands with limited management supervision. Out of hours work will be necessary, as will the ability to travel throughout Orkney. You must also be eligible to work as a food law officer within Scotland, and membership of REHIS or equivalent is desirable.
Given the seasonal nature of this work, the post is open to annualised hours.
You will need to demonstrate a commitment to quality service delivery and self-improvement by undertaking a scheme of relevant continuous professional development and be willing to help out with all aspects of environmental health work within our small team.
Orkney is regularly voted as one of the best places to live in the UK. If you are looking to combine your enthusiasm, knowledge, and expertise in environmental health with an excellent quality of life, then we would love to hear from you.
You should hold a full current UK driving licence.
This post is subject to Basic Disclosure Scotland clearance.
Prospective applicants are invited to discuss the post by contacting Nick Long, Service Manager Environmental Health, e-mail nick.long@orkney.gov.uk or telephone 01856 873535.
Closing Date: 23:59 on Sunday 6 April 2025
Please note that interview and relocation expenses may be paid for this post, in accordance with Council Policy.
