About Us:

The Digital Infrastructure Department delivers first-class IT support and services that underpin the STFC scientific programme of activities and partner organisations. We provide HPC Data Centre facilities, a comprehensive network and communications environment to support the science undertaken by STFC alongside other areas such as Service Desk, Applications, Infrastructure and Cyber Security. We support STFC’s projects in big data analytics, machine learning, AI and large computational modelling.

About the Role:
\n\n
This Linux system administration/DevOps role is to support the day-to-day management of the monitoring software suite and provide expertise to support the Data Centre infrastructure – HVAC (Heating, ventilation and Cooling) and Electrical by monitoring, collecting data and creating dashboards.
\n\n
Working closely with the Data Centre Operations management team; Heads of Hartree and Scientific Computing Departments on the strategic development of HPC Data Centres in accordance with STFC goals and priorities.
\n\n
Key Responsibilities:
\n\n
• Work with the HPC Data Centre Operations team to develop the software strategy for the Data Centres and Facilities.
\n\n
• Perform proactive monitoring to ensure the health, performance and security of our production and non-production environments on-premises Data Centres.
\n\n
• Support infrastructure related to problem management, incident management, and software security management.
\n\n
• Provide operational and administrative support of Windows/Linux operating systems to manage servers and associated applications, notably Nagios, Trend 963 and DCIM. Write scripts for collating data from SNMP MIBS; Databases and SIPS devices.
\n\n
• Assist with the Operations documentation, Disaster Recovery procedures across all computer room facilities
\n\n
• Linux Opensource software proficient. A few examples of technologies we work with on a daily basis: Nagios; Gitlab; Modbus/Sip/Babel buster, Cacti, Elasticsearch, Weather Map; Grafana, opensource applications, Linux, Python, Docker, Raspberry Pi and more.
\n\n

• System administration knowledge of Linux operating systems (Centos/RHEL) environment and associated applications, notably Nagios, Trend 963 and DCIM. (S/I)
\n\n
• Good working knowledge of Shell Scripting or other Scripting languages such as PHP; Bash; Perl and PowerShell, to write scripts for collating data from SNMP MIBS files; Databases; SIPS devices and Modbus. (S/I)
\n\n
• Good knowledge in exploiting automation to reduce maintenance overheads as part of continuous delivery. (S/I)
\n\n
• Experience in HVAC and Electrical Distribution systems knowledge (S/I)
\n\n
• Good working knowledge in Nagios; Gitlab; Modbus/Sip/Babelbuster, Cacti, Elasticsearch, Weathermap; Grafana, Docker, Raspberry Pi and associated applications. (S/I)

• Must be enthusiasm for investigating new technologies. (S)
\n\n
• Experience in high availability and distributed systems. (S/I)

• Degree in a relevant subject or equivalent work experience. (S)

Our teams are predominately based at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and Daresbury, whilst this role will be based at our Rutherford site, there will be a requirement to occasionally travel to all STFC sites.
