In light of The Scottish Government proposal to develop and deliver High Secure Services for Women in Scotland, we are excited to announce a great opportunity to join our Medical team.
We are seeking a Consultant in Forensic Psychiatry (or a Consultant Psychiatrist with a special interest in Forensic Psychiatry) to join our fully staffed Consultant workforce at the State Hospital, Carstairs, South Lanarkshire.
As the Responsible Medical Officer, you will provide clinical leadership to multidisciplinary teams, delivering care and treatment for up to 20 patients. You will work alongside a supportive and experienced group of Consultant colleagues. There is also scope for sessional input with partner organisations, with whom the State Hospital maintains Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
The role offers excellent opportunities to develop teaching and research interests, supported by the hospital's strong connections with various academic and research institutions. The State Hospital takes pride in its well-established ethos of research and clinical effectiveness.
Our hospital provides high-security psychiatric care for Scotland and Northern Ireland and is recognised for delivering exceptional treatment while respecting the dignity and individuality of our patients. Services are delivered within a state-of-the-art facility completed in 2011.
As part of the Forensic Network, the State Hospital plays a vital role in the national planning of forensic services. We are committed to strengthening ties with the wider forensic environment and service providers. Flexibility is available regarding clinical sessions for external work.
Experience working in female forensic psychiatry services would be desirable.
For an informal discussion please contact Duncan Alcock, Associate Medical Director on 01555 842013.
Closing Date: The closing date for applications is 11.59pm on 4 April 2025.
Interview Date: Please note interviews will be in person at the State Hospital and take place on Friday 25 April 2025.
If you have any queries or require assistance regarding the application form or recruitment process, please contact the HR Team on [emailprotected] to discuss your requirements.
Other Important Information:
Successful applicants may be eligible for a relocation allowance depending upon whether they meet the necessary criteria set out within the Consultant Grade Terms and Conditions of Service, 2007.
At the State Hospital, we know diversity enhances our work and workplace culture. We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where all belong. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are underrepresented in our workforce. These include candidates from minority ethnic backgrounds, those with disabilities, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender identities and women.
Right to Work: To work in the United Kingdom, there is a legal requirement for an individual to demonstrate that they have the relevant permission to work in the country. This permission is, without exception, granted by the UK Visa and Immigration Service. As part of the pre-employment checks for a preferred candidate, NHS Scotland Boards will check this entitlement to work in the UK. It can be evidenced through a number of routes including specific types of visa, and settled and pre-settled status. To find out more about these routes of permission, and if you can demonstrate such cover, please refer to the GOV.UK website. For specific types of post, it might be possible to secure sponsorship via a UK Skilled Worker/Health & Care Worker Visa. However, this is only possible if the employer is a licensed Sponsor, and if the post does not fall below the current minimum salary threshold or ‘going rate’. Further information on these criteria can be found. Please note that the State Hospital is NOT licensed to issue certificates of sponsorship under current UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) regulations. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK without requiring sponsorship to work with us. It is ESSENTIAL that you have checked that you have an appropriate right to work in the UK BEFORE applying.
