Walsall College are recruiting on behalf of K Transport. You will be working alongside qualified technicians dealing with all aspects of the maintenance and repair of heavy vehicles. You will work towards a level 3 heavy vehicle technician qualification. Inspecting and repairing a range of heavy vehicles (HVs) for a large fleet of operators.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you’ll do at work
A Heavy Vehicle Service Technician will inspect, maintain, and repair large vehicles weighing 3.5 tonnes and over.
The Heavy Vehicle Technicians jobs fall into three main categories:
* Servicing - carrying out checks
* Maintenance - replacing/repairing engine parts
* Diagnostics - using the latest diagnostic equipment
As an apprentice, you will observe, learn and gain an understanding of a wide range of engineering skills and processes while under the instruction of skilled technical staff.
You will be able to:
* Demonstrate these skills and processes as the training period progresses by working independently or with a team
* Learn and understand the importance of Health & Safety within the workplace
* Learn the fundamental technologies - Heavy Vehicle chassis design, engine, fuels, transmissions, hydraulic and air braking, etc.
* Develop the skills to construct or modify apparatus and instruments from verbal instructions and drawings
* Learn how to maintain workshop equipment and to keep it in good repair

Course contents
* Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
* The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
* Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
* Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
* The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
* Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
* Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
* Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
* Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
* Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
* To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.
Your training plan
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will achieve a Level 3 HGV Technician Standard, Functional Skills if required. Throughout your time as an apprentice, you will be supported by Walsall College. You will be assigned a training coordinator.
Training requirements will be discussed at the point of employment to suit both your own and business needs. Most training and studying will be site-based, and you will attend one training day per week at Walsall College. You should be comfortable with planning your workload as you progress through the apprenticeship.
