We are looking to appoint a Quality Group Leader in the Quality Engineering Department. You will report to the Quality Engineer. You will fulfil the necessary requirements within the Department to meet the Company’s objectives by ensuring that operations are performing optimally from a quality, cost, and delivery perspective, using the right tools, materials, and processes. An important part of the job involves designing the company's quality standards and testing processes against those criteria.
KEY JOB FUNCTIONS:
Strategy formulation and implementation:
1. Ensure that the quality department is run on sound commercial, ethical, and professional principles, and activities and behaviour of all staff members support achievement of the company strategy, vision, mission, and objectives.
2. Maintain standards with respect to critical, functional, and cosmetic requirements.
3. Meet customer expectations with respect to critical, functional, and cosmetic standards.
4. Ensure department members are competent in understanding these requirements and auditing boats effectively to ensure standards are met.
Environment, health and safety:
1. Operate in accordance with health, safety, and environmental legislation, policies, and procedures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of staff and visitors.
People management:
1. Provide leadership to Quality Inspectors under your control, coach, develop, and manage a high-performance team that delivers on its objectives.
2. Encourage strong communication between Quality Inspectors and other interfacing department members.
3. Facilitate improvement ideas and support implementation to improve overall performance and efficiency of the department.
4. Complete regular performance reviews and resolve disciplinary issues in accordance with company policies.
5. Implement succession planning in your department.
Operational activities:
1. Control the quality of boats by providing an inspection safety net to Manufacturing.
2. Conduct quality inspections on all relevant areas (Mould Shop, Assembly, Stores) and communicate defects to production and other relevant departments for rectification.
3. Control the quality (signing off and labelling) of parts and components as necessary.
4. Control non-conforming products by labelling and quarantining as necessary.
5. Conduct on-and-off site vendor inspections as necessary.
6. Provide knowledge and training to Manufacturing regarding required quality standards.
7. Develop boat and component quality standards in the form of boundary samples.
8. Compile inspection reports for further action.
9. Report on boat and delivery status regularly.
10. Participate in problem-solving and corrective action activities (e.g., Workstation and Line QRCI (4D’s and 8D’s)).
11. Make judgements regarding acceptability against the Quality Standard.
Continuous improvement:
1. Facilitate change in driving improvement in quality expectations and understanding.
2. Support the change of mindset in manufacturing to understand that responsibility for quality belongs to everybody.
3. Facilitate the change from inspection (reactive) to auditing (prevention).
Stakeholders’ liaisons:
1. Facilitate defect reduction programs by compiling and distributing failure information from various sources and conducting meetings to track defect reduction activities.
2. Work collaboratively with Manufacturing to determine, prioritise, and action defect reduction activities.
3. Communicate and negotiate with the client regarding the level of quality and make judgements as required.
Ad hoc:
1. Perform ad hoc tasks as required.
2. Provide support to other factories and to the harbour as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
1. Minimum Qualification: NQF Level 4 Qualification
2. Ideal Qualification: Engineering Diploma (Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, Mechatronics)
3. A minimum of 2 years Quality experience in a manufacturing environment
4. Own transport and valid driver’s license.

4. Core Skills knowledge (SPC, MSA, APQP, FMEA, Control Plans) will be an added advantage.

6. Willingness to travel between sites.
