This is an exciting opportunity for professional development for a deputy ward manager / Senior Sister / Charge Nurse on David Evans Ward. The post holder will be responsible for the support of overall management of the clinical area and the professional development of staff within that area. They will be accountable for supporting the ward manager on overall provision of excellent nursing care. The applicant will be a professional role model leading and coordinating the nursing team. They will support the continuous responsibility of the management and organisation of the ward / department. On occasion the post holder will deputize for the Ward manager in their absence.
The post holder will be responsible for providing leadership and professional development for the nursing and support workers within the clinical area. They will provide professional advice and support to the whole multidisciplinary team in caring for patients. The post holder will also provide nursing leadership for implementation and evaluation of all education, training and development of staff. They will develop, implement and evaluate policies, guidelines and protocols for the management of patients attending the clinical area in conjunction with the specialist MDT teams. They will be responsible for the interpretation of and maintaining compliance with Trust policies.
The post holder will aim to ensure that all patients are provided with a safe and high quality standard of care. They will be aware of the Care Quality Commission and work with the multi-disciplinary team ensuring that they are maintained. The post holder will also be involved in developing and delivering high quality patient centered care and working with the divisional team to ensure this is incorporated within the business objectives.
The post holder will work closely with the Centre for Professional Learning and Clinical Skills Teams to provide teaching/learning support in agreed areas of clinical expertise.
Key Responsibilities
1. To act as a role model of expert clinical practice in the specialty.
2. To be a role model and effective leader.
3. To participate in direct patient care.
4. To work closely with carers and relatives to ensure individualized patient centered care is provided.
5. To obtain patient and relative feedback by undertaking clinical rounds with the aim of providing excellent standards of care.
6. To ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to a high standard and to audit documentation in liaison with the ward manager.
7. To be a competent user of and participate in the on-going development of the Electronic Patient Record.
8. To work in close liaison with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
9. To promote the development of evidenced based practice on the ward.
10. To promote clinical supervision on the ward within the Trust’s strategy.
11. To ensure high standards of care are given to all patients, monitoring this through spot checks and clinical quality indicators outcome measures.
12. To explore opportunities to develop nursing roles in accordance with the Chief Nursing Officer of England’s “Ten Key Roles”.
13. To advise patients on the promotion of health and the prevention of illness.
14. To liaise with other departments in the hospital e.g. Estates, Facilities, Finance, IT.
15. To ensure that services supplied are of an acceptable standard and problems identified are registered and addressed. On-going or serious problems will be notified to the line manager.
Management Responsibilities
1. To be responsible for the provision of nursing care on the ward.
2. Recruit and retain a workforce qualified to meet the needs of the patients in that area.
3. Manage ward staffing day to day to ensure effective use of resources. This includes responsibility for the duty rotas, annual and study leave, bank and agency usage.
4. Ensure that all staff in the area undergo an annual performance development review and have a personal development plan (PDP).
5. Identify and investigate any issues of conduct, discipline and performance within your team, in accordance with trust policies and procedures, in liaison with the ward manager.
6. Maintain a safe and acceptable environment for patients, visitors, students and staff, reporting and taking appropriate action on any hazards, incidents, faulty equipment or inadequate standards of cleaning.
7. Collect data and provide essential information in a timely and accurate manner as requested by the directorate and trust management teams.
8. To ensure safe custody and administration of drugs in accordance with Trust policies and procedures and in liaison with the pharmacy team.
9. Ensure the area’s team is aware of trust policies and procedures and know how to access the latest versions.
10. To participate in meetings and project work as identified and delegated by the Matrons, Service Managers and Divisional Nurse.
11. Deputise and act up for the ward manager, if required.
12. To investigate and respond to informal and formal complaints in a timely manner encouraging an open and learning environment.
13. To monitor all incidents that occur within the clinical area undertaking root cause analysis as required.
14. To manage any changes in practice or learning identified through incident reviews.
Educational Responsibilities
1. To identify educational needs of all members of staff through regular appraisal and review, taking appropriate action in liaison with the ward manager.
2. To be aware of the educational needs of student nurses ensuring that preceptors and assessors are available.
3. To be responsible for the orientation and development of new staff to the area, including the allocation of a preceptor.
4. To ensure the ward maintains a sound learning environment for all students.
5. Organise and participate in educational activities (e.g. teaching programmes) within the clinical area.
