Health and Safety Officer Location: West Yorkshire Job Type: 3 – 6 month contract - working 2 - 3 days a week. Department: Health, Safety, and Quality Assurance Reed Scientific is recruiting for a qualified and experienced Health and Safety Officer for one of the UK’s leading Toxicology Laboratories. This role is crucial for ensuring compliance with health and safety standards and risk assessments, adhering to HSE regulations. The position offers a unique opportunity to contribute significantly to maintaining a safe working environment for all staff, contractors, and visitors. Candidates with additional experience in quality assurance may be considered for a full-time role, assisting the Quality Manager within our Quality Assurance Team. This role will require the individual to work 2-3 days per week. Day-to-day of the role: Health & Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with all health and safety legislation, ISO 17025 standards, and internal policies. Risk Assessments: Conduct and review risk assessments, COSHH, and safety audits tailored to laboratory processes and equipment. Safety Protocols: Develop and maintain safety protocols, procedures, and documentation, including emergency response plans and safety guidelines. Training & Development: Deliver safety training and inductions, develop ongoing training programmes, and ensure staff compliance with laboratory safety standards. Incident Management: Lead investigations into incidents, identifying causes, and recommending corrective actions. Audits & Inspections: Perform routine health and safety inspections and conduct thorough and rigorous health and safety audits, identifying potential hazards and areas for improvement. Required Skills & Qualifications: Education: Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Environmental Science, or related field. Relevant safety certification (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) required. Experience: As a Health and Safety Officer, with at least 2 years in an ISO 17025 accredited lab. Experience in a forensic laboratory is advantageous. Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of laboratory safety regulations, ISO 17025 standards, and relevant health and safety regulations. Skills: Strong communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills. Proficient in MS Office Suite. Personal Attributes: Detail-oriented, proactive, and able to work independently. Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to safety culture.
