About the role An opportunity has arisen for a Project Engineer – Thermal Systems to join the Mechanical Engineering department in a rapidly expanding and exciting work environment. Reporting to the Principal Engineer for Thermal Systems, this is a key role where the successful individual will be responsible for Battery & HV Power Conversion Thermal Management architectures, components & systems. Fortescue Zero provides these systems into various sectors, predominantly automotive and off-highway, but also motorsport, aviation, marine and defence. What you will do Contribute to early project phases such as feasibility studies and concept selection to define requirements and system architectures. Creation of Thermal Management architecture descriptions, diagrams / schematics for Batteries and/or HV Power Conversion products. Apply engineering fundamentals to problems (ability to carry out hand calculations/0D models of thermal system performance). Cascading Project/Product requirements into Systems requirements. Define component specifications, and work closely with procurement teams to engage & nominate suppliers. Liaise with electrical & controls teams to define electrical compatibility and control strategies for selected hardware. DFMEA, and generation of system level validation and verification plans including DVP documents. Support mechanical development teams to generate test procedures and attend tests where appropriate. Analyse test data and derive meaning from results to support data correlation processes. Guide and support the work provided by external suppliers/subcontractors. Create technical reports and customer documentation. Present results to customer and other stakeholders as required. Propose research strategies and OPEX funded projects to keep Fortescue WAE at the forefront of innovation. Lead a range of team experiences such as project reviews, project updates, customer facing situations, issue resolution or general team building activities. About you Proven industrial experience, ideally within the field of Thermal Management for HV Batteries, Power Conversion, DCDCs. A degree in Mechanical/Automotive/Aerospace Engineering or in a relevant discipline. Solid knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid circuit design practices and analysis techniques. Knowledge of air, water, dielectric, hydraulic, refrigerant based systems would all be an advantage. Working knowledge of 3D CAD and PLM software, ideally NX and Team Centre. Excellent communications skills. Demonstrated initiative in prioritising workload and solving challenging problems under pressure. Strong data analysis skills. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivery of Thermal Management solutions into a variety of high-performance applications. They will be required to adopt a System Engineering approach, working cross-functionally with various engineering, manufacturing, quality and supply chain departments to deliver from concept through to industrialisation.
