Teaching is at the core of Oxford Royale’s Summer School programmes. We are seeking an experienced and accomplished teacher to lead our History, Philosophy, and Literature programme. The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background, possessing an in-depth knowledge of key historical events, philosophical theories and literary works. This role requires a passion for inspiring young minds and fostering an engaging, discussion-based classroom environment where students can explore complex ideas, debate perspectives, and connect classical theories with modern applications.
Key Responsibilities
* Prepare and adapt lessons using the Teacher’s Guide, ensuring the content is suited to students' interests and academic levels.
* Deliver engaging lessons guiding students through significant historical events, foundational philosophical theories, and essential literary works.
* Use subject expertise to promote student progress, providing personalised feedback and adapting lessons to meet individual learning needs.
* Lead interactive activities such as debates, speechwriting, and discussing classical theories.
* Mark assignments, provide detailed feedback, and complete student reports reflecting individual progress.
* Handle administrative tasks including maintaining registers and attending staff meetings.
* Collaborate with fellow teaching staff to create an engaging and supportive learning environment.
Position Details
* Programmes are two weeks in length, with options for 2, 4, or 6-week contracts available between July and mid-August 2025.
* Teaching takes place Monday to Friday, with lessons scheduled from 09:00 to 16:00, although shorter hours may be available in some locations.
* Compulsory online and in-person training will be required before starting the role.
* While key teaching materials are provided, teachers are expected to adapt lesson plans to suit student interests and contribute their own expertise to the course.
Person Specification
* Extensive knowledge in History and Philosophy, with a solid foundation in classical and contemporary Literature.
* Ability to lead engaging, discussion-based classes that encourage critical thinking and open debate.
* Open-minded and enthusiastic about guiding discussions that respect diverse viewpoints.
* Creative and confident teaching approach, encouraging intellectual curiosity and fostering a collaborative, inclusive learning environment.
* Fluency in English and strong organisational skills.
Essential Qualifications:
* Completion of an undergraduate degree (or higher) in History, Philosophy or a closely related field.
Desirable Qualifications / Experience:
* Experience teaching History, Philosophy or related subjects to students aged 13-18.
* PGCE qualification.
* Professional experience facilitating discussions in the relevant fields.
