Priory Hospital Chelmsford are looking for an experienced Ward Manager ready to make a lasting difference to the lives of people in our care.
Main duties of the job
To provide Clinical Management and Leadership of the full nursing team on the Ward, this includes being a highly visible role model and mentor to the nursing team.
The post-holder has responsibility for overseeing and maintaining the highest standards of nursing care. The role will act as a senior clinical member of the team, providing advice and support from a nursing perspective and oversee and hold responsibility for the ward environment and its resources.

Situated within three acres of landscaped grounds, Priory Hospital Chelmsford is an independent hospital that specialises in the treatment and management of adults and adolescents with a range of mental health problems. There is a highly experienced team of mental health professionals and support staff, which include consultant psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses and therapists.
The hospital offers calming and recovery focused residential treatment for up to 60 service users, as well as day care and outpatient services, including separate facilities for young people.
We provide expert treatment for the following services: Eating disorders, Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Addiction services.
Our highly experienced multidisciplinary team deliver personalised treatment programmes alongside the use of a wide range of therapies.
Job responsibilities
* Manages the ward and resources effectively, ensuring appropriate staffing levels and skill mix of nursing experience and skills, including effective rota management, annual leave, training arrangements, and sickness and absence management.
* Ensures all members of the nursing team receive clinical supervision, appraisal, CPD requirements, and complete mandatory training.
* Addresses shortfalls in development and ensures that training and performance issues are resolved.
* Recognises and rewards positive performance by the nursing staff, commensurate with their roles and responsibilities.
* Acts as a highly visible role model, mentor, and leader, creating a culture that promotes learning, development, inquiry, and professionalism.
* Disseminates, implements, and monitors compliance with relevant policies and statutory requirements of the hospital.
* Takes appropriate action to ensure that the standard of care that patients receive is of the highest standard.
* Ensures all patients have clear current care plans that reflect their personalised needs and are evidence-based, ensuring family members and carers are suitably engaged.
* Makes sure that the physical healthcare needs of patients are assessed and managed effectively, alongside their mental health and psychological needs.
* Ensures the ward has clear procedures and processes to support safe and effective running, including patient nutrition and environmental cleanliness.
* Actively contributes to the recruitment and retention of staff to the ward and hospital.
* Ensures clinical communication, records, handovers, reports, and other patient-related information are conveyed and recorded promptly and accurately.
* Develops and maintains strong working relationships with all clinical and non-clinical colleagues.
* Promotes and applies the requirements of diversity and equality.
* Undertakes and completes clinical investigations and complaints, ensuring thorough and prompt resolution.
* Ensures compliance with the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, and Deprivation of Liberties in accordance with Priory Policy and National Requirements.
* Responsible for Medicines Management in the clinical area, ensuring all Registered Nurses undergo competency-based assessments and manages medicine errors transparently.
* Liaises with the ward pharmacist and acts promptly regarding items identified by pharmacist audits or other requirements.
* Ensures incident reporting is completed promptly and takes corrective action where required.
* Leads team reviews of incidents and ensures staff receive incident debriefs timely.
* Engages with other members of the ward MDT to facilitate positive and efficient MDT working.
* Deputises for the Director of Clinical Services as required and takes on additional responsibilities, including clinical audits and recruitment events.
* Ensures effective communication with external stakeholders and professionals involved in patient care.
* Expected to provide cover and support to the wider team and site as needed.
* Participates in the onsite on-call rota.
Person Specification
Knowledge/Experience/Qualifications
* Must be registered with either NMC or HCPC, depending on service needs.
* Willingness to complete further clinical, managerial, and leadership training relevant to your area of practice.
* Staff rostering capability/knowledge.
* At least 2 years experience in a supervisory capacity within a relevant clinical setting.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Experience of clinical audit and/or service improvement based on evidence is desirable.
* Experience of managing multiple priorities.
* Experience in management and leadership of teams.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and will require a submission for Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
£40,000 to £44,000 a year, depending on experience.
