Job overview
The Breast Imaging Department at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust has an opening for a Trainee Assistant Practitioner to join its multi-professional team.
Assistant Practitioners in Mammography undertake high quality mammograms under the supervision of a qualified senior radiographer to screen for early stage breast cancer. In house practical learning takes place in the Mammography departments of The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Shrewsbury and The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford as well as on mobile units at various locations throughout rural Shropshire. It is essential that you hold a current UK full driving licence and have access to a car for work purposes. You will be expected to undertake both level 4 and 5 training via an accredited institute.

Main duties of the job
1. To work within the scope of practice of a Level 4/5 Assistant Practitioner.
2. To carry out mammography examinations to the required standard.
3. To work under the supervision (direct or indirect) of a senior radiographer.
4. To be responsible for radiation protection of patients/carers/others during mammography procedures.
5. To provide a high-quality mammography service and work with accuracy and speed to NHS Breast Screening Programme standards.
6. To demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and a flexible approach to work.
Eligibility Criteria
* Can be any age post full-time education 16+
* Cannot already be on an Apprenticeship or any Government funded training
* Cannot have a qualification at the same or higher level in the same vocational area.
* Has been a UK resident for 3 or more years.

Meets the eligible and valid residency status and permission to work in the UK criteria in Annex A of the linked funding document.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Maths and English GCSE grade A* - C or 9 - 4 or equivalent.
Experience
* Genuine interest in the work of the Breast Screening Service.
* Previous experience of working as part of a team.
* Previous experience of working in the NHS or a care setting.
* Time spent in a Mammography department.
Knowledge
* Basic knowledge of the NHS Breast Screening programme.
* Awareness of Health & Safety issues in the workplace.
Skills
* Effective communicator with a wide range of people.
* Able to work closely with colleagues.
* Able to work under close supervision and on own initiative recognizing personal limitations.
* Understands the significance of confidentiality.
* Ability to use departmental IT systems namely- NBSS (Breast Screening), CRIS (Radiology).
Other
* Able to travel to and work at all breast screening sites.
