Job overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual for a full time (37.5 hours per week), fixed-term (12 months) role within Clinical Immunology and Allergy at King’s College Hospital on the Denmark Hill site. The successful applicant will join our ever-growing, friendly and interactive team which delivers an excellent diagnostic Immunology service to King’s College Hospital, Guy’s and St. Thomas’s Hospitals, local GPs and other customers throughout the UK. An extended working day is in operation from 08:00 to 19:30, Monday to Friday, which is covered by three shifts. There is also a 3 hour voluntary shift on Saturdays. Our service is fully UKAS accredited, and we are accredited by the IBMS for Training. We offer an extensive repertoire of analyses covering autoimmunity, allergy, monoclonal gammopathies and immunodeficiency. Staff are rotated through all sections of the service. Approximately 95% of our tests are performed on automated and interfaced analysers. The laboratory team comprises 26 staff members, which includes Biomedical Scientists, Clinical Scientists, and Medical Laboratory Assistants. The laboratory team is supported by a team of medical personnel and administrative staff. We are committed to quality improvement. There is a programme of audits and we encourage suggestions for improvement.
Main duties of the job
Medical laboratory assistant staff are trained in most sections of the lab. We are committed to staff training and staff are actively encouraged to develop themselves through the various training opportunities available within Synnovis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities
Organisational
* Understand the management structure of the department and own role within the structure
* Attend local and corporate induction sessions and Trust mandatory recall training
* Be aware of Organisational and Departmental Policies including sickness absence reporting, requesting annual leave and health and safety procedures
* Perform role as part of a team, recognising other skills and priorities
* Cooperate with trainers when learning new tasks and contribute to the basic training of others
Technical
* Use laboratory information system according to protocols
* Advise service users on sample preservation and transportation to laboratory
* Prepare pack and dispatch samples for transfer
* Accurate data entry of sensitive patient information onto the laboratory computer system, requiring frequent, long periods of concentration
* To receive and prepare specimens for testing using automated, semi-automated and manual methods. This requires a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
* Prepare laboratory reagents including chemical solutions according to SOPs
* Perform automated, semi-automated and manual processing of specimens within training parameters and where appropriate under the supervision of senior staff
* Process samples under supervision for clinical trials and research and development projects as and when required
* Ensure quality control measures are carried out to monitor analytical performance, take corrective action where applicable and report any failures to a senior member of staff
* Use of various pieces of laboratory equipment for analysis
* Set up equipment for use by other members of staff
* Undertake preventative maintenance of automated analysers as and when required
* Undertake basic troubleshooting of expensive analytical instruments and automated analysers under supervision of senior staff
* To file samples following appropriate protocols and keep records as required
* Dispose of excess and tested samples according to Health and Safety protocols
* Ensure fridge/freezer temperatures are recorded daily and any indication of temperature problems brought to the attention of the line manager
Scientific
* Extend understanding of the scientific basis of laboratory work
Clinical
* Understand the necessity for the accurate communication of complex information
* Perform role as part of a team to ensure that Immunology turnaround times are not exceeded
Administrative
* Receive, sort and log patient samples on Laboratory information system
* Assist with Laboratory record keeping to ensure compliance with good work practices required for the UKAS ISO15189 Accreditation
* Where appropriate, effectively communicate routine laboratory results
* Undertake work file management to ensure all results are reported with agreed turnaround time under Biomedical Scientist supervision
* Ensure that any stock received is scanned into the lab, and that any stock used is scanned out. Follow the Standard Operating Procedure for the correct storage of consumables and reagents. Ensure accurate record keeping.
* Effective communication with laboratory and medical staff to ensure that specimens are dealt with appropriately and in a timely fashion
* Accurately enter patient results onto laboratory computer system as and when required
* Answer the telephone in a friendly and professional manner. Act as the first point of contact for problem related analysis
* Liaise with GP surgeries, hospital clinics and other departments within Pathology as and when required
* Specimen reception duties including; checking specimens received, checking details with specimen senders and liaising with service users as necessary
* Assist in clerical duties and test data entry
* To use information systems, specialist and general software, in data entry and the collection and interpretation of information to assist in the provision of laboratory services
General
* Compliance with local and national policies for the safe secure and confidential processing, and storage of patient and other laboratory information within the compliance of SOPs and the Synnovis Quality Management system
* Ability to organise and prioritise own day to day duties taking into consideration the urgency of tasks
* Maintain integrity and accuracy of laboratory database where appropriate
* Be proactive in escalating any possible issues that may impact on service delivery to senior colleagues
* Participate in audits of laboratory process and procedures to cover pre-examination, examination and post-examination processes
* Ensure workplace and workbench areas are kept clean and well organised
* Build and maintain working relations with all members of staff, and promote effective teamwork
* Adhere to equality and fairness in working relations
* Maintain and promote the professional image of Synnovis
* Train MLA staff new to the Department and provide advice to less experience MLA and clerical staff
* Undertake a period of laboratory training and competence assessment
* To actively participate in an annual Personal Performance Review process and be assessed against competencies of the role.
* Maintain knowledge and skills as identified by the performance review cycle
* Observe and adhere to local and national health and safety policies
Key Working Arrangements
* Works on own initiative, with supervision available as and when required
* Can work, supervised, on automated instrumentation
Band 3 employees actively participate in various specific laboratory duties and rotate through sections of the laboratory. Once competent, as well as administration related tasks, Medical Laboratory Assistant staff are responsible for running analysers with the supervision of BMS staff. There are additional tasks such as helping prepare IQC, troubleshooting and escalating instrument issues to senior staff, stock management and equipment maintenance. There are also opportunities to take up other responsibilities such as managing health and safety duties, training others and being active in quality management processes.
The laboratory sections include ImmunoCAP 250 (Autoimmunity and Allergy), Immunofluorescence (Quantalyser), Immunoblots (EuroBlotOne), ELISA (DS2), Proteins (Optilite, Capillarys, Hydrasys), Flow Cytometry (Aquios) and Manual assays.

Qualifications
* Good all round education to GCSE standard
* NVQ 2 plus previous experience in a Lab or equivalent level of education or NVQ3
Experience
